How could this be. I found this out by accident. I've been having terrible anxiety lately and 0.5mg of xanax doesn't touch it. I even increased my dose to 1mg at times which is high for me and still nothing but a little sedation. I took some Benadryl for the heck of it as it felt like Akathisia, and boom, all was gone and resolve within 15 min. Whats up with that.
Current meds: Serzone 200mg bid, Klonopin 1mg bid, Metoproplol 12.5mg bid, Xanax prn
Thanks in advance.... Gary

oooh, good to know. I've got a bottle here and next time I have an anxiety attack, I will try that. My mom told me it helped her sleep and took the anxiety away but I didn't really believe it. I'll have to give it a go. thanks for sharing.

In addition to being a antihistamine, benadryl also acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Prozac was derived from diphenhydramine.
Also, the anticholinergic effects may help anxety.

Histamine is excitatory. Besides serving the purpose of response to allergy, it stimulates other neurotransmitters. Benadryl being an antihistamine is blocking that. Maybe it is a clue that for some reason your histamine response is too strong. Maybe an indication of an undiagnosed food intolerance or allergy of some kind.
I have heard here over the years that benadryl has multiple functions other than antihistamine, one of them being a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
I do not remember the details on how to treat low histamine or high histamine, but the Pfeiffer Institure recognizes both conditions among their leading causes of psychiatric disorders. They raise histamine or lower it with natural supplements.

There is no benadry in prozac, they are only chemically similar AFAIK. Ie the benadry molecule was altered to make prozac.

Does anyone know if benadryl could help taper down xanax? I am filing very small amounts off one .25mg. tablet daily, to reduce and eventually get off xanax.
I also have magnesium, GABA and taurine. The mag. I have to be careful with because I have IBS.
Last time I tapered off xanax 2mg. I used dramamine. Is this similar to benadryl? It worked. I slept better and was able to go completely off the xanax.

Anyone know if Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is contradicted w/ MAOI's? I would worry since it has some SSRI qualities. Is there a risk of hyperserotonemia?
