Afraid to try Wellbutrin

Posted by kerria on December 16, 2007, at 23:29:47

When i was a patient in a day program for a few days recently the psychiatrist there thought that i would do better if i took Wellbutrin and gave me a prescription for the lowest dose. i'm afraid to start it though because i'm afraid of things getting worse with me. Also i can't see that Dr again. If i like being on wellbutrin i'll have to make an appt with my dr to renew. He only gave me two weeks supply.
i wasn't able to stay a patient in that program because of insurance not being so good and feel so fragile now- and not doing well - i want to be so much better- get so much more done for the holidays- i feel so bad for my family that i can't manage to be more together. now i'm seeing a T once a week but not together enough to get the work done in therapy. i'm not taking any meds now to help- but am so so sensitive to side effects of meds.

some side effects i'm worried about are seizures, psychotic thinking/ losing control and shifting of parts - have DID and worried about switching causing problems. It's already so difficult- understatement.

In the past i haven't been able to take ADs except for Prozac for three months. Now i have to take oxycontin for severe pain (unsuccessful surgery this year)and levothyroxine. i have diazapam for emergencies. i wish there were a med that could help me be stable and productive. i'm always struggling with pain, physical and psych/ emotional pain..and confusing broken close relationships:(

Thank you for input, advice,
kerria

Should i take wellbutrin? what has helped others? (nm)

Hi Kerria what dose did he prescribe for you? Have you discussed this on psychology too? Does anyone have seizures? Usually they are only a concern if someone is on 450mg or over. Love Phillipa

I took Wellbutrin for a couple of years, and may go back to it if the EMSAM doesn't work out. For me, it's been the most trouble free AD ever -- and I was taking a high dose. No seizures. No weight gain. No GI trouble. No foggy-head.

Some people find it activating, and it can feel a bit like increased anxiety for some. I didn't have a problem with that, but then -- in my case, despite co-morbid anxiety dx, I took it with a stimulant, and the combination didn't increase anxiety for me.

It's probably worth trying, if you're looking for an antidepressant. One of its benefits is that it often starts kicking in sooner than other ADs do -- less lag time between starting and finding out if it works.

Good luck. I hope that helps.

Hi Phillipa,

It's 75mg, once a day. Sometimess it feels like i have small seizures during the day when the pain medicine makes me sleepy, you know the sudden shaking/type of seizure that happens before falling asleep? i hate that- and it happens to me a lot.
i wish that i could stop taking the pain medicine- or lower the dose but i get in too much pain when i lower the dose.
All i need is another medicine to cause real seizures:(

Those are myoclonal jerks, and they're harmless.

I don't know if that helps ease your mind at all, but i hope it does.

i know what they are- the mild jerks that happen- but they happen during the day also, and i attribute them to the oxycontin because they never happened to me so often as now, with the high dose i take. i feel kind of seizy- like i might have seizures maybe. It's hard to explain.

Kerria 75mg is a low dose maybe if I'd started on that or stayed on a low dose might have worked. How much oxycotin are you on? Don't think it causes seizures. Love Phillipa

Phillipa is right (again! lol) 75mg is a small dose & 400mg+ usually gives convulsions though its still pretty rare.

I think Wellbutrin would be especially beneficial for you considering your pain med is making you sleepy during the day. And Wellbutrin WILL help you get alot more done as it does have a 'get up & go' effect. Though you might need more than 75mg to get such an effect. Most people take 200-400mg/day.

I used it to combat Nardil-induced daytime sedation & it worked very well consistently 'till I stopped taking it (same time I stopped Nardil). Much better sustained efficacy than Provigil. Its good stuff. I'd say it would actually HELP you get through Christmas. And its not mind numbing at all - if anything it will clear your head. It increases dopamine so may help you 'feel & enjoy' more things too, though it's main effects are via Norepinephrine re-uptake inhibition (get up & go).

Best wishes,
teck.
