Cytomel to augment antidepressant

Posted by nihocl on December 13, 2007, at 9:17:09

Has anyone ever taken Cytomel for this purpose? How about anyone taking Cytomel in general? Does it make you a zombie? I can't take any more of that than I have already....

I've never taken Cytomel to augment an AD, but my pdoc and I did discuss the possibility at one point. He uses Cytomel as an augmenter with some of his patients with good results. I don't think it would make you a zombie since it tends to be stimulating. If you started with a low dose, I think it would be worth a try. I seem recall seeing research indicating that it is an effective augmenter.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide.

Try googling the throid boards as I was there a lot trying to get mine regulated they speak a lot about cytomel and yes pdoc's use it to augment ad's as my long ago pdoc did with success. He said he never would have put me on synthroid but on cytomel. Good luck. Phillipa

I have been taking Cytomel to augment antidepressants for about 8 years. 25 uG (or MCG, micrograms) worked quite well. My Pdoc sent me for evaluation by a thyroid specialist who said long term use of 25 uG would eventually cause the thyroid to permanently shutdown. He recommended 12.5 uG as a relatively safe maximum dosage.

Cytomel creates a mild hyperthyroid condition, which has a stimulating effect. I have never had a zombie effect. To rule that out try searching psychobabble and the web for Cytomel zombie.

Cytomel affects the whole system and may make things worse for a little while until all the changes settle out, which takes about 2-3 weeks for me.
