I know Effexor is an SNRI which includes activation of norepinephrine at higher doses, but it also activates serotonin along with the SSRI's.
So, upon learning from a post made by Linkadge which reports that Effexor may be chemically related to PCP, and some listings on Effexor's wikipedia site saying it's in the same class (phenylthylamine-sp?) as amphetamines, how does this drug differ from the SSRI's? Wouldn't the SSRI's be considered amphetamine-like the way Effexor is, or does Effexor act upon different serotonin transmitter sites to have a unique effect?
And WHY are these drugs approved for anxiety disorders???? Maybe the patients in the clinical trials reported some subjective anxiety which wasn't really a true anxiety disorder--the type that leads to panic attacks and debilitating life conditions. Perhaps these patients were depressives who were extremely sensitive and too predisposed to report on any odd feelings that they thought was anxiety, but really wasn't.

I don't know how effexor is different than other ssris. The NE effect is low. Maybe it has some interplay with opioid receptors or something else. It is clearly different, as evidenced by quick harsh withdrawal symptoms if a dose is late, which doesn't happen nearly as dramatically or even at all with other meds. It is often blamed on the short half life. but that doesn't explain it either, because you can go beyond the half life of other ssris and not have such dramatic withdrawals as effexor. And the withdrawals. To cause such severe withdrawals compared to other ssris is evidence that it is doing something besides just serotonin reuptake inhibition.

They do help anxiety for SOME people. No case is cut and dry.

True but no everyone why not? We're all different. Same heart med doesn't work for another person or antibiotic on and on the list goes. Phillipa

~~~ You are absolutely correct in terms of my experience... and I thank you for posting that.
