Clomipramine withdrawal

Posted by binarywoman on December 9, 2007, at 10:37:45

My son (24yrs) is refusing to take his clomipramine for OCD because he's worried that the capsules are made of bovine products and he's going to get Mad Cow Disease. He's currently on 100mg a day and is going cold turkey.

I found tablets available in Canada but not in this country and there's a veterinary tab made by Novartis but they claim it's unsafe for humans. I'm following that up.

Has anyone gone thru a clomipramine withdrawal like this? I'm worried and I need to know what to expect.

Thanks,
Karen

I would still see if there is a way you can convince him to take it at least long enough to withdrawl properly.

Do you think his reasoning is genuine (ie are there other reasons that he might not want to take it?)

Clomipramine 100mg withdrawl cold turkey could be horendious, mood swings, insomnia, irritability, loss of energy, paranoia, etc.

Does this concern extend to other medications or just this one?

Would it help to have him speak to a pharmacist?

Link is it really made with cow products? I thought all meds were drugs or something like digitalis from a plant? Phillipa

Thanks for writing back.

I've tried and his dr tried. It is totally irrational. He's been on this med for two years and now it dawns on him that they're made out of gelatin. Gelatin, unless specified, is made of bovine products. Of course, there have only been 3 cases of Mad Cow in the US in the history of the world and all three contracted it outside the US and were not US nationals. That is the O in the OCD is about for him.

His doctor raised his am seroquel and I'm giving him more klonopin.

So far he's only complained of a headache. He's also on Luvox, seroquel, tenex, lithium, tegretol, and klonopin.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Can you not get generic clomipramine in tablet form?

What about opening the gellcap to just consume the contents. (I suppose that would have got in contact with the gellcap though!)

Anyhow, tablet form is available in Canada.

I've got months worth of left over generic tablet clomipramine if you want it. (whoops I suppose I shouldn't say that, although you do have a prescription)

Link, Thanks for the offer but I think we mite get in trouble for that:) Tablet form is not avail in US...only in veterinary form which I'm seriously thinking about.

How do you buy meds legally from Canada?

If you find an online canadian pharmacy, you can legally buy it if you have the prescription.

I've never bought meds online, but perhaps others could help. You can also google search canadian pharmacies.

I went online and found a few Canadian pharmacies. There is an organization called the CIPArx that certifies licensed pharmacies. My son's dr doesn't want to do it and says she'll just find something else for him to take.

This is day 3 and so far no withdrawal. He's saying he feels less obsessional without the clomipramine.

He's been freaking out over having 2 teeth pulled and 4 cavities filled which is happening today under sedation. I'm hoping that once the "crisis" is over, things may calm down a bit.

Well certainly see how it goes. If he feels better off the drug then certainly no need to push it on him.
