Why won't your mind just be slow? Are you an introvert? Studies show that introverts are essentially compensating in their personality for over-activity in the area of the brain that regulates the effects of the fight or flight response--I believe the amygdala or hippocampus. Your brain is failing to properly shut down the reticular activation system, failing to produce the relaxation response.
Try meditation and exercise. If that fails and your condition becomes debilitating, try anti-anxiety meds. For some unfortunate people, fighting anxiety is a losing battle--why suffer?

first check situational issues. anything that stresses you out at night...something about going or being at home...roommates/family, boredom? a need to be social (social anxiety?)
is it more physical or mental?
if its physical...maybe try exercise at night. that's what i used to do. i'd exercise about 8 at night...i know people say to exercise in the morning. but when you're not a morning person and you have so much energy at night...it just worked quite well for me.if it;s mental energy try doing something that WORKS your mind (but not frustrates-that makes it worse)
i used to get an overactivity of mind in the evenings...that's when doing work in MATLAB or something really helps. if your in to GA than do some vectors...etc.
or doing some type of intricate work really dwelling on minutiae (i did/do artwork)

For some unfortunate people, fighting anxiety is a losing battle--why suffer? It doesn't have to be a "losing battle" and medication is not necessarily a lifetime sentence with psychotherapy/psychodynamics. Support groups like NAMI can help as well as building social networks and becoming involved in something that interests you.

i walk around, especially in bed! i think about things that get out of control. Sometimes i do it because i feel i have to.
Antianxiety meds are a just way of soothing the nerve.
I am not going to be who has to have a valium all the time. I would rather be on a stimulant. Stimulants do the opposite for me, they make me less anxious, and calm me down.
But my doctor right now doesnt want that rougt, mainly mood stablizers.

Honestly, if your doctor doesn't want to go the route of stimulants, maybe it's got something to do with a history of abusing stimulants?
If your doctor wants you on a mood stabilizer, maybe that's for a similarly good and just reason?
Mood stabilizers will not leave you a zombie, they will put a cap on those highs you get, which have a way of getting you into trouble. They will help keep you from becoming morose, boosting your antidepressant. Yes, you probably would be giving up those "high" feelings you like, but it might be in favor of a more even keel, GOOD feeling more often.
And then again, there's always therapy as an option.
This is the end of the thread.
