During approx 3 yrs on fluoxetine, I added about 20 lbs - not trivial to me going from 155 to 175 - 154 is my high limit for "normal" BMI. I really believe my exercise and eating didn't change and that it was the med causing weight gain, although nobody in the medical establishment wants to agree.
Now I've added metformin XR (for diabetes) and in 8 months lost about 15 of those lbs with again no real changes in exercise or eating.
Anybody with similar experience? I'm happy with the way I feel on proz, and have no side effects from the metformin.

Actually, the medical profession has finally started to recognize the problem. Yes, SSRIs cause weight gain. It wasn't shown in the earlier studies, because they only lasted about 6 - 12 weeks, and the weight gain starts around six to nine months in. There ar a few thigns that can mitigate the weight gain, Metformin is one that gets a lot of good press in the journals. Topomax is another, although some people have trouble with that one causing some cognitive problems.
I'm sorry that your doctors haven't been quite as supportive as they could be, by, you know, admitting that you're not just eating more and exercising less. Even doctors admit, sometimes, that blaming the patient is a time honored tradition in medicine. But more and more s tudies are out there, proving the medications cause weight gain -- in the absence of behavior changes in patients.
Good luck.
