Going off Lexapro-starting Mirtazapine tonight

Posted by tootercat on October 26, 2007, at 18:53:27

Oh hello all you lovely peeps out in "which drug will truly help" land. Lexapro has never been the greatest for me and in fact really messed with my sensitivity level with respect having "the BIG O". I still have enjoyed sex but not to the degree that me and my hubby would like.

Along with that it just hasn't been working well at keeping my depression at bay. I am quick to fly off the handle, I cry for no apparent reason, and the scariest thing for me was that on Tuesday I wanted to crawl under my covers and hide. Never done that - don't want to.

Saw doc today - He originally was going to prescribe Wellbutrin but I have been suffering from intermittent overwhelming anxiety so that got vetoed. He says that he has gotten positive responses from patients on Remeron (mirt.) What he didn't tell me was that a big side effect may be weight gain. Crap! I have had a problem with putting 30 lbs back on that I took forever to lose (I am a recovering dieter and don't want to go on another one!) I am a sugar junkie and was hoping that somehow there might be a "sugar patch" (ha ha ha) like the nicotine patch used for quitting smoking. Other than saying "buck up" does anyone have any advice and/or experience with any of this???

My friend in AA says to do the steps around sugar.
She also said "buck up" which immediately made my hair stand on end.

Okay thanks for "listening".

Love,
toots

Remeron often works when other AD's don't...it's an excellent drug, i think your Doc made a wise choice. As far as the sugar prob...i've heard people say when you have a sugar craving chew sugarless gum instead of eating sugary foods. It's worth a try anyway, good luck with all.

I have been on a combination of 45mg Remeron and 10mg Lexapro for about 9 months. I feel better than I have for years. I also take 40mg Adderall XR. It does a great job of controlling the Remeron munchies. Even without the Adderall, it seems like I'm better able to control my appetite than I was when I first started taking it. Hopefully, you'll have the same success.

The other thing you can do to counter the sugar issues is to eat protein with every meal. There is a website that deals with sugar issues called radiantrecovery they have a 7 step program that deals with sugar in connection with meds. One of the first steps is to include protein at every meal and snacks to offset the sugar cravings. It does help. I am on lexapro and do this to make sure I don't gain any. But lexapro has had the side-effect with me to make me have no appetite. Go figure.

Anyway, try to protein thing. It has certainly helped me. I have lost some of what I gained from sugar cravings.

Good luck rk
