I have been through every drug - I swear! After still not getting things better with Emsam, my doc decided to try me on a low dose of Desipramine. I have tried Elavil in the past but didn't stick with it because it made me sleepy - so I don't know if it helped with depression.
My doc said to start out on 10mg at night. I've read a lot of posts where people say it makes them sleepy and some people say it is activating.
I also take Klonopin (thank goodness!). I already have trouble sleeping and depression/anxiety.
Any thougths on Desipramine?

This drug is most likely more activating than elavil. I guess you'll find out.

Caused me major anxiety immediately, but I don;t handle norepinepherine well and I think that is the main thing desipramine boosts in your brain. Good luck

I love the drug lofepramine, which is metabolized into desipramine. Lifts my mood after about 3 weeks. It gives me much needed motivation and endurance - after a long 'hilly' walk I would not be out of breath! Also great for anticipatory anxiety (in my case), but watch out if you have other anxieties. If it does give you added anxiety then maybe try & walk or exercise it off!?
I would consider both lofepramine & desipramine NRIs.

I agree with Jimmyboy.... it is an activating norepinepherine reuptake inhibiter.
It worked very well for my atypical treatment resistant depression for several years. It took about 10 days to kick in, and then it was really obvious.... no question that it was working.
I did not have any anxiety at the time, and the desipramine did not produce any in me.
I had extreme dry mouth as my only real side effect.
I can't remember the dose I was on, but we did titrate up for a few weeks.
Hope if works for you.
This is the end of the thread.
