Cheaper substitutes to pramipexole (mirapex) ?

Posted by Amigan on October 6, 2007, at 6:59:08

Hi.
I read in this forum that this is a good med but it's too expensive for me. Could you recommend me a cheaper substitute or two?
From the same family of drugs, (dopamine agonists) Pergolide is very cheap where i live, but should i bother? Is it any good?
Bromocriptine is a bit more pricy from Pergolide but still affordable. Is it better?

Any other suggestions? It doesn't have to be a dopamine agonist. What i searching for, is a drug that will increase my motivation and cheer me up. Similar to what coffee does. I have NO problems with my libido.
Except from stimulants (Excellent but VERY hard to get) and Sulpiride which i have already tried and i'm not so thrilled with it.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'd suggest giving EMSAM a shot, but I'm probably starting to sound like a scratched CD.

ESCAM doesn't exist here. Selegiline exists only in the form of pills and it's not very cheap.

There is a herbal supplement called Agnus Castus that acts as a dopamine agonist. I think it would be cheaper than Mirapex. I've taken it at times and it seems to work quite well for me, not as intense as Mirapex and fewer side effects too.

That is the exact same reason I had to stop ropinirole(requip/repreve). Someone please correct me if I am wrong but haven't most countries recalled Pergolide because it causes heart valve problems, or was that another DA?

You mean because of its price, right?
Did you substitute ropinirole with something else?

Well, i did a search and i found that you are right:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pergolide

So, if i can't find pergolide anymore, bromocriptine or Agnus Castus extract would be the best pick for me?

I haven't heard many people use bromocriptine for psych purposes, but the few I have rated it as being quite poor in terms of mood and adverse effects.

Also, this note in the BNF seem to suggest that bromocriptine is in the same class as pergolide, so I'd recommend trying Agnus Castus first.

Fibrotic reactions

The CSM has advised that ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists, bromocriptine, cabergoline, lisuride [discontinued], and pergolide, have been associated with pulmonary, retroperitoneal, and pericardial fibrotic reactions. Before starting treatment with these ergot derivatives it may be appropriate to measure the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum creatinine and to obtain a chest X-ray. Patients should be monitored for dyspnoea, persistent cough, chest pain, cardiac failure, and abdominal pain or tenderness. If long-term treatment is expected, then lung-function tests may also be helpful.

yes it was due to cost but I was prescribed it for restless leg syndrome, if I suffered from parkinson's disease it would be really cheap. My pdoc switch me to clonazepam for severe anxiety and when I read the fact sheet I found I could use it for RLS too so I stopped taking the ropinirole because i couldn't afford it. Ropinirole is good for Social phobia, depression and sexual side effects from ssri's too. Well that was from my experience from the drug anyway. babble mail me if you have anymore questions. C
