I wish you could make subjects a little (a lot) longer. Dr. Bob, you really need to update this board with decent forum software. Anyhoo...
I am on Selegiline (tab), and am getting the same side-effect I had when on Nardil b4. Sweating like crazy with little to no exertion, but especially sweating like mad when doing even the smallest exertion, like vacuuming a room, etc. It's definitely caused by the MAOI. No other drugs I've been on (and the list is huge) haven't caused this.
I heard there was a drug I could take to combat this side-effect. Does anyone know what it is, and if this, or some other drug, can be taken safely with an MAOI?
I have "the" insomnia and sleep disturbance side-effects too. I'm also taking abilify. Both drugs, only 1 week so far, and the ?lowest? dose.
In the past, I took Nardil for many, many months at a time, and never found a cure for the sweating. Most doctors didn't know a thing about it (the side-effect), nor would they research it for me. Wow, I wish I could get paid that much and be that lazy!
Thanks, please let me know!

Yep, I have the sweating. No one's ever had any solutions. My docs seemed unimpressed by this side effect, even though it's the number one distressing SE I get from Nardil. It's frustrating. And it means that I do much less outside in the summer than I used to, because it's too annoying to come in totally drenched after only about 15 minutes of activity.
Wish I had an answer.

> ggDang, that doesn't sound promising. I hear you on the frustration.. I'm 5'9" and 167 pounds... only a tiny gut at 38. I was 160-165 pounds when I was in my low 20's. If I was really out of shape, that would be one thing, but... I barely exert myself at all, even in a cool room, and wammo, super sweat. I expected this side-effect again, but not at the bare lowest dose of Selegiline. I scared to increase my dosage now.
I probably should have just went with the Abilify for 1-2 weeks at least before even starting Seleg. to see if my mood/depression/irritability improved. Wondering if I should quit the Seleg. now, and see how I do. Why suffer from side-effects (and have MAOI drug/food limitations) if I don't need to?
The insomnia is intense, as in the sweating, as is the loss of appetite (which was already a problem). Doubt the MAOI would be kicking in, in one week, anyway.

Chairman MAO suggested that a lot of the weight gain on Nardil might be due to water retention -- perhaps this is being demonstrated with increased sweating? There are a few drugs that directly combat water retention, but in any case maybe adding some coffee would be helpful to fight this side effect and maybe it would decrease the sweating response to specific situations? Maybe not, I don't know.

You betcha. Thankfully, in my experience, the sweating doesn't last that long in comparison to the other side-effects.

You were lucky.. I was on Nardil 2 or 3 times, for many months at a time. No matter how long I took it, I do not recall the sweating side-effect to ever decrease at all.
Only one time I took the med, after 4 months or longer, the insomnia started to subside. I think so anyway.. either that or I found that melatonin tablets (OTC) did help me sleep. They don't help me sleep at all with the Selegiline (but only been on it a week). Anyway, I'm stopping the Seleg. for now, and see what Abilify can do on its own for a couple of weeks. I'd really like to sleep through the night again, and stop sweating like, well, people who sweat a lot! ;)

...Enigma,
I have been on Nardil for most of the past ten years. I have taken time off for other medication trials, but this is the only med that works for my atypical depression and social anxiety.Currently I am taking quetiapine(Seroquel) for the insomnia. This is another atypical antipsychotic like Abilify but it really hits the histamine receptors even in low doses of 25 to 50mg. I tried Abilify once, it was the only med that has ever caused akathisa for me. I didn't last very long on it.
I'm not much help on the sweating. I have always sweated heavily and notice some increase on Nardil. I just stay hydrated and carry a towel. One thing Nardil has cured is the sweaty palms from social anxiety. Pre-Nardil I had to wipe my palms before I could shake somone's hand; now my palms don't sweat at all.
Be well,
Jedi

Ahh, that's ok. I actually used to be cold all the time.. freezing cold hands, etc, to the point where I would need a heater on me at work and such. This hasn't been the case the last couple years or so. I would never sweat this much from such little exertion before Nardil (and Selegiline). Actually, I could stand humid weather without a problem, when everyone else around me was complaining about it. I can't tolerate the heat at all now... even months after being OFF of Nardil and on no other drugs.
I quit the Seleg., this being my 2nd day off of it. I noticed a difference in the sweating right away, but still get night sweats. I would still get them off the Nardil. Not sure when they started, but it can't be more than a few years. No idea what causes them. I should research it sometime. Gonna mow the lawn today, and I'll see how I do with the sweating today. The thing is, with the Nardil, it doesn't have to be hot for me to sweat.. all it takes is the smallest exhertion over at least 5 mins (like vacuuming a small area). Drives me nuts.
I had to go look up akathisa, and I'm wondering how much of my sleep disturbances are due to Abilify now. I am definitely jumpy, uneasy, restless, and such, and this started with the Abilify, almost immediately after starting it. I did try Seroquel once, but I forget what it did to me, and why I stopped taking it. I have an empty sample bottle of it in my drug cabinet (my cabinet, not for the family).
With Emsam and Nardil (taken separately of course), I had insomnia, but if I did sleep at all, it wasn't like what I have now. Last night was pretty bad, as most of last week, where I would wake constantly while in REM sleep. Also, I'd have some annoying dream that doesn't make any sense, where I would have to figure something out that couldn't really be figured out. I would wake up while having this "nightmare-ish" type dream, be obsessed with worry, then sleep again for bit, have the same dream again, then wake up again. It's actually much more infuriating than insomnia was for me.
My older type of insomnia was just not being tired, and able to stay up early into the next morning. Nardil, or this effect of delaying sleep (due to Nardil), caused me to have these narcotic and narcoleptic-like "sleep-waves" as I called them. Felt like I was drugged without my knowledge. I would fall asleep, knowingly, but I didn't care, at my kb (in my comp chair), on the floor near my chair (carpet), etc, or if I was at work (haven't worked in 2.5 years - due to depression), I would put my head down on the desk, or try to make it to my car and sleep there. Each time I was put out like this, I would only sleep 2-4 hours in a row. They would never occur with any regularity at all. They seemed totally random.
So, at this point, if the sleep doesn't improve in the next week, maybe I'll look into Seroquel again. I just checked my "drug list", and I guess I took this about 1.5 years ago. Only notes I made about it is that it has no positive effect on me, and made me really tired the next day after taking it.
Agitation (but my irritability is pretty much gone, except when driving ;) ), and restlessness could be worse I guess, but the not sleeping is driving me crazy.
As usual for me, if a drug does quell the depression or other bi-polar (hypo-manic only) symptoms I have, I have intolerable side-effects. Thus, I stop the meds and go back to being depressed.
I'll see how long I can last on Abilify. I have to admit, I believe it has done an enormous job on the depression, and almost immediately after starting it. Been on it about 9 days now. For possibly the 1st time in 2.5 years, I might see myself back at work again.. But, I need to get stable and stay that way first, before I go down that road again.
I can repost how I'm doing in a bit if anyone is curious.
This is the end of the thread.
