I like to know if others using Emsam have had severe GI side effects and what they are. I've been using a 6mg patch for three weeks and have the worse IBS attack I've had for seven years. I have persistent nausea, bloating, spasms of my entire gut (unusual for me) and complete lack of tolerance for foods I've had no trouble with before. I want to be able to take some data back to my mpsych since none of these are listed side effects except the nausea.
I welcome all answers. Cathleen

some peopele have reported GI distress.
Personally, I had a bit of constipation and someing some bloating. I just went up to 9 mg (have been on the 6 mg since the end of April) I am having a little bloating and some gas.I expect, based on my first go-round, for this to pass quickly. Hope it does for you too.

I'm not sure how that works but I guess even though it bypasses the gut via transdermal it still has all kinds of phisiological effects and gi distress may be one-or a secondary effect from some thing it does in the brain.
My BP was 102/62 today which is unheard of for me. Give my poor arteries a rest I guess.
I'm up late helping a friend with her newborn-I'm afraid to go to slepp anyways. Like it might break the spell or something and I'll wake up a pumpkin.
Today was a very good day.

"a pumpkin" That's funny..that's the same verbiage I use to describe my own similar concerns.

Thank you for the feedback. I agree it would seem unlikely that GI effects might result from a transdermal patch, just because the medication follows a different and more immediate course than by the oral route. I stopped my patch Friday afternoon and today, Sunday, the painful gut spasms and nausea are much improved. I was wearing the patch on my abdomen - maybe this intensified effects? though the abdomen is a designated site on the package. I'm going to wait three or four more days and see - if my gut continues to get better I'll try the patch again. If crash occurs with a new patch I find an actual SE to be more likely.

Hey D0pamine,
do you find you have extreme empathy for the subject in the movie "Awakenings"I do.
If I am not mistaken you have some of the can't-move-itis too. Correct me if I am wrong....
Anhedonia is inexplicably painful and I find it impossible to describe it accurately to someone who has not experienced it.
I have trouble with fatigue from time to time but it is not the same as vegetating although I am sure, from the outside looking in, it is hard to discern the difference.
What is this? Does it herald something more sinister to come?
Rhetorical questions.Whatever this lack of vitality is, it frightens me more than any other symptom I have experienced. Do you relate?
Peace,
Kaye
