Is the following claim correct?
"Norfluoxetine is the only active metabolite of fuoxetine. Therefore the antidepressant effect of fluoxetine is entirely due to norfluoxetine."

> KlavotI don't know where you found this quotation, but it's a misinterpretation of the pharmacokinetic data. Prozac is supplied as a racemic mixture of R- and S- enantiomers, both of which are roughly equal in antidepressant effect. Of all the metabolites, S-norfluoxetine is also considered to be of similar antidepressant effect, and it has a longer half-life than its parent. R-norfluoxetine is both less active, and better eliminated, so it is of little consequence.
Poor metabolizers at 2D6 produce less S-norfluoxetine, but because the parent is active, it is considered to be of little therapeutic consequence.

Sir, I am in your debt. I am most grateful that you found a way to get the blocking formula changed to something more reasonable. I meant to say something on Admin, but I never found the words.

That's very kind of you Larry. Though it was a collective effort, many other people made useful suggestions as well.
