Weight Control on Wellbutrin

Posted by alittlehigh on July 20, 2007, at 18:28:40

It seems that most of the people concentrated on this forum tend to appreciate weight loss. I am the opposite. Although I am prescribed Wellbutrin SR 150 mg twice a day I do not want lose weight.

Does anyone have any advice? I have started eating when I am not hungry, and I basically never turn down calories.

Does the weight loss result from metabolic changes or is it purely appetite based?

I have already slipped a few pounds and am very frustrated. If anyone can offer any advice or insight I would be very appreciative. I've been on almost every other med in existance and this one really works for me, which is why I will be especially reluctant to let it go.

Thanks,

Jake

It's a combination of things -- appetite suppression, and metabolic changes. The good news is that it should be self-limiting, as your body adjusts, any weight changes should taper off.

My advice, really, would be to see a dietitian, who can help you work out a meal plan to help you keep your weight within normal limits. Otherwise, it's also possible that adding another drug would help reverse the appetite suppression. Maybe adding an SSRI, which might boost the effects of the Wellbutrin?

It would also be worth discussing this with your doctor. Maybe there's something else that might help.

Good luck.

Usually see the wellbutrin added to effexor for the weight loss. Only I've never heard of any SSRI that would cause wt loss have you? As that would be definitiely on my list to try. Love Phillipa

Actually, the SSRIs were originally thought to cause some weight loss. Some doctors still believe that they do. More recent information is that there's some weight loss on start up, but within about six months, they begin to cause weight gain.

And the original poster wanted to stop the weight loss he was experiencing with Wellbutrin, not to lose weight.
