Chantix... has anyone tried it?!?!

Posted by aqua1221 on July 10, 2007, at 5:31:07

This is the newest smoking cessation medication. It's not like Zyban (Wellbutrin). It targets the nicotic receptors in the brain, which release dopamine when stimulated.

There seems to be a lot success with its use for quitting smoking. Now there are speculations that it would be useful for alcoholics, and possibly with other addictions and psych disorders.

When I first heard of this drug, I thought about it's potentials uses, in a backward sort of fashion based on Zyban, since it's used as an antidepressant.

I've always thought it could be used as an activating antidepressant and for ADHD. Any thoughts or experiences on this?

If anyone has a pdoc who likes to talk meds, and wouldn't mind asking this question, I'd love to hear a professional's opinion!

I'll try to ask mine whenever I see him again, although I don't know when that would be... plus we have reallly limited time, so it would be a poor use of his attention with my real concerns.

Yes, I have been taking it since January and it helps better than anything else I have tried for quitting smoking. I have not noticed any side effects. It doesn't completely take away the cravings, but makes it much more tolerable.

Do you feel like it boosts your mood at all? Does it cause any stimulation or anxiety?

I wonder if it would substitute for benzos if it's opposite from wellbutrin as it reved me up? Just a thought. Love Phillipa

I was on Chantix for quite a while, and quit smoking, but relapsed not because the drug was not effective, but the well-known thing that addicts do, relapse because they really don't WANT to quit. While on it it was initially very activating and mood lifting--didn't last too long however.
