I don't know what's wrong with me, but for some time (5 years or so) I have developed this problem of severe sleepiness, especially during certain activities (eg. during lectures, when I have to study, etc.)
I'm taking a strenuous Biology/Chemistry summer class. It's 4 hours of lecture twice a week, and 4 hours of lab twice a week. I don't have a problem with the lab and I stay fully awake and enjoy it because it's interactive. You're looking at microscope slides and socializing, etc.
But the lecture is a nightmare. The professor is very good and very clear, nevertheless, I still feel this terrible urge to fall asleep throughout the lecture. Even when I slept really well at night, and sometimes I even sleep more than I need to compensate. Everyone else seems very alert and participate in class. I just barely take notes because it's all I can really do.
Has anyone had this problem? Do you know what it might be or how to resolve it?
PS. I have depression and take meds for it, but that shouldn't be the problem because (a) I've had the sleepiness problem for 5 years-- with and without the meds, and (b) I only feel sleepy during certain activities (ie. during lectures, or when I have pressure to study) but can stay awake if I'm doing something different, like when I'm at work (waitressing)--that keeps me awake like nothing else.

I'm not a doc but...it seems like stimulants would be the way to go. Provigil might be an option if you have good insurance; its expensive, but its gentler than the amphetamines and re-fillable, since its a C-IV med, not a C-II like the amphetamines and ritalin.
