Colon cleanse

Posted by malcolm664 on June 19, 2007, at 23:24:13

My sister has been recommending that I undergo a procedure called a colon cleanse. It's supposed to be very effective at removing all the toxins from your body. As well as being recommended by many docs.

My question is whether the cleanse would wipe out the 8 weeks of progress I've made on Parnate (I'm on 80 mgs/day).

Or is the idea of a colon cleanse just some new age BS?

Malcolm
It will depend on where you go and who you ask.
The nature of the Main Board is such that it is better for me not to go into the details of my colonic irrigation here, which I mention just to be a general disturbance.
Just Babblemail me and I'll tell you all.

Colon cleanses have been around for many years. Lots of people things they are great. I knew one lady that had a colon cleanse with coffee. It took days to peel her off the ceiling. I just know that it is not something that I would willingly do for any amount of money. Flushing is something I will leave to the porcelein gods.

Colon cleansing is sheer quackery. Just ask any gastroenterolgist. People who swear by it are generally obsessed or uncomfortable with their poop in some way (which is a symptom of hypochrondria, btw). Frequently a characteristic middle class to upper class neurosis involving deep seated shame and fear of the body and its natural processes. My guess is that they feel ashamed of their dirty poo and want to be clean.

Your colon is not clean and will never be clean. It is not supposed to be. There are billions of bacteria in there, which are mostly harmless and necessary for digestion.

And no.. no matter what they tell you, your colon does not retain years of built up "mucus" that needs to be cleansed. It is sheer weirdness and I will never understand the fascination with it. I think the benefits are mostly psychological.

The author of that article seems very emotional on the subject (as warring tribes often are to there perceived enemies). I've never had colonic irrigation and have no intention of having one, but I recognize that constipation has an adverse effect on health and wellbeing.

A woman walked up to me in the bank last week to remind me I'd left my paying-in book on the counter-top, and as she opened her mouth to speak I was hit by a wall of stench, like walking into a toilet cubicle right after someone has used it. This was not ordinary stale breath - it smelt of pure sh*t, like someone f*rting in my face. We've all probably had a similar encounter, but scientist that I am, I wondered why the smell was so rich and overpowering. The most likely conclusion I came to was that she was severely constipated and that the 'fumes' from the decaying feces were somehow finding their way into her breath. I've read elsewhere (in articles by medical doctors) that constipation can cause bad breath, so there must be some medical explanation for it. I'm guessing that if the 'fumes' were so concentrated as to be overpowering to a person standing a meter a way, then it's plausible they would be having an adverse effect on the person who was inhaling that stench 24/7. Common sense tells me it simply cannot be healthy.

I certainly agree that many people who have these treatments are in good health and do so mainly out of hypochondria. It's always amused me the way people seem so astonished to find the water the shoved up their backside comes out dirty and sh*t-stained. But for all the hypochondria and pseudo-science some practitioners play on there may still be a grain of truth in it somewhere.

I understand what you are say. But there might be another reason for the horrid breath. Several years ago, I had a very bad ulcer. After a gastroscope, the doctor indicated it was huge and was almost perforated through the wall.

Prior to the scope, I knew something was wrong because my breath smelled and tasted like feces. No amount of mouthwash, breath fresheners or Tums made any type of difference. Once the ulcer was healed, my horrid breath went away.

Well that would explain it then.
