Should I avoid alcohol on an antidepressant?

Posted by Cynthia_Greene on April 27, 2007, at 18:10:03

I'm going out tommorow night and want to have a drink or two. But I just started Effexor and am taking 75mg. I don't want to cause a drug interaction. Will this be okay?

The pdocs will tell you not to drink because alcohol allegedly makes you more depressed or something like that. Personally, I think they just dont want you to drink so you wont be in danger of turning into an alcoholic and drinking all of your problems away.

1-2 drinks should be fine.

OK, that was a joke. Lighten up, folks. We can have some humor in here sometimes.

I've been on SSRIs for years, and a glass of wine or a beer is fine. Getting sloshed may not be. It made me very sick the next day if I got ripped roaring drunk.

My pdoc told me once that it was fine for me to have a little alcohol. But I cannot recall which drug(s) I was on at the time. You will probably feel the alcohol more on the Effexor. Personally, I'd stop at the one drink. Have a good time.

Thanks for the answers! I think I'll have one drink tonight, and depending on how I feel after that, I might not have another. I definitely don't want to get completely drunk in a public place, so I'll be careful.

I don't think you can turn yourself into an alchohol you are or you aren't. If you are you keep drinking, blackouts, disrupts homelife and other things. Is a social drinker you know when to stop and that's when you stop. You don't fall off bar stools or things like that. My husband was diagnosed alchoholic doesn't drink any more ll years but I remember when he would fall off the riding lawnmower into a wet and muddy ditch and I'm have to strip him outside and send him into the shower. And he didn't take meds. Dosen't now either. Love Phillipa

Hi Cynthia,
I didn't change my drinking habits whilst on lexapro or whilst on reboxetine. I'm a social drinker and will have a few glasses of wine or beers when out with friends, enough to get me pleasurably drunk but never wasted or out of control. I didn't have any problems; the only difference I found is that the meds seem to potentiate the effect of alcohol, so I drink less. I wouldn't worry just as long as you drink slowly so you can 'monitor' the effects as you go along.

After last weekend, I feel less worried about the potentiate effect. I had several mixed drinks but barely felt a thing. Either the people in the back of the restaurant weren't putting much alcohol in my drinks or I have a ridiculously high tolerance to it. But I had a good time anyway.
