Anyone else on Xyrem

Posted by ClubSoda on April 19, 2007, at 9:40:18

I googled Xyrem here and most of the posts are anywhere from 1 - 3+ years ago. Any recent experiences from anyone? And I apologize if I didn't page through the threads long enough to find something newer.

I have been on it for just 3 weeks and I don't notice any difference. Not that I really expected to so soon. I have had a couple of days where my brain didn't feel as foggy. Don't know if that's wishful thinking.

I started out taking 2grams twice a night for a week, then 3grams for a week, and last night was 4 grams. I thought having to set an alarm to wake up and take the next dose was kind of counter-productive (like the hospital waking you up to take a sleeping pill), but I found myself waking up anyway around the time I was supposed to take the 2nd dose. The only side-effect has been nausea with the first dose at 3 & 4grams. But that went away pretty quickly.

My main reason for taking it is CFS & ESD. My insurance company didn't blink an eye at giving it to me which really surprised me.

If anyone has any experience I'd love to hear it.

Mark

Ive had discussions with friends over this,Xyrem is said to be a "notorious date rape drug" ghb.

That hysteria aside, ive used ghb extensivly before it became illegal, owned books on it,etc.

After trying xyrem i was ASTONISHED to find the differance,in fact i could not believe it i dident read it myself that it was ghb.

At its legal status,i used various forms of GHB,powders liquids, various heatlh stores etc,and im stead fast that xyrem is 1000 percent different, weaker, than ghb.

If you find a faq on ghb you will see for yourself how xyrem hardly matches any of the noted expected effects.

Shame your paying out so much, even insurance wise, for a drug that in its true form would prob help you enormously.

It's been around for a few years apparently and is so ultra-controlled because of the "date-rape drug" association. It was originally intended for Narcolepsy, but doctors prescribe it for CFS, ESD and Fibromyalgia.

From an anti-depressent standpoint I'm hoping that if I get restorative sleep (stages 3,4 & 5) it will help the depression. My EEG, EMG & EOG while at the sleep clinc show that I get stages 1 & 2 only.

I'm interested in it--for primary and secondary insomnia that adds to my problems.... May I ask what ESD is?

Do you mean EDS...excessive daytime sleepiness, which it is not allowed for.

It also at a docs discression allowed to be used for off label for things such as simple clinical insomnia. However still all and all its not easy to get.

willyee is correct - EDS = Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. My rheumitologist (sp?) referred me to a sleep disorders clinic for testing and that's where they found that I have Sleep Apnea (pretty mild) and don't get into Stages 3 & 4 sleep. I went through about 3 months of getting used to sleeping with a CPAP machine before he suggested Xyrem.
