I'm thinking about switching from Zoloft to Emsam (I'm aware of the washout period and all that....) However, I have a history of kidney stones, and am wondering how they would treat the pain if I had another attack? I usually average 1 stone every year and a half or so which is treated with vicodin (during treatment with Topamax I had 7... not fun!) The restrictions for meds with MAOI could be a hinderance... What do they use for pain in emergency situations such as this when one is taking an MAOI?

I have had 3 ECT treatments with anesthesia while taking Emsam.

You can use codeine, from my experience, with no problems. Also possibly vicodin. I haven't had problems with that, although maybe you need to experiment or ask your pdoc about that.

Just no pethidine, and maybe too no dextropoxyphene, and no Ultram.
Is that right?

the restriction is for synthetic opiods, ie demerol, ultram (tramadol)
The codeine/mophine semi-synthetic derivatives, ie codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, mophine, and fentanyl are OK. Also serotonin syndrome has been reported when AD's and some other psyco meds are taken with synthetic opiods. ie DMX and demerol.
hydrocodone is lortab and vicodin
oxycodone is oxycontin, percocet, percodan
