That corresponds with my personal experience. ADs have done little or nothing for me, but we're still trying them.I noticed that the one study posted revealed that mood stabilizer plus placebo was just as effective as mood stabilizer plus AD. Perhaps it may have been that the participants were so accustomed to dealing with the miserable side effects of typical ADs that they were pleasantly surprised by their absence when taking the placebos, thereby skewing the study.

Probably makes sense since in more than half of all clinical trials of antidepressants in unipolar depression, antidepressant < placebo. Why should anything be different for bipolar depresson?

I have Bipolar II and suffer mainly from depression with bouts of hypomania. My main symptom of hypomania, aside from the fun parts where I have more energy and creativity, is anxiety, irritability and worse - all out rage.
I take 100 mg of Lamictal which seems to help stabilize me, particularly depression wise. When I used it as monotherapy I spiraled into hypomania with the bad parts of rage and anxiety and had to add 5 mg of Zyprexa, and 1 mg of Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin).
I also take 10 mg of Lexapro. I am still on the low side. My PDOC is thinking of switching to Effexor XR as she feels it is a more efficient antidepressant. I'm worried about the awful withdrawal I've heard of if it doesn't work.
In any case, I feel that I need an antidepressant as part of my cocktail. My depression can be crippling.
