Wellbutrin makes me mean!!

Posted by pearlcat on March 21, 2007, at 12:44:04

Has anyone had a problem with wellbutrin making them crazy? I have been on it for 3 weeks after coming off effexor and I have turned into a raging B!@ch! I cry everyday, I yell at my husband constantly and have no patience,etc....
I am also on 200 mg Lamictal. My pdoc cancelled my appt' yesterday because she was sick. I told the nurse about the problems and they called back to tell me to get off the drug and keep taking lamictal. Now i cannot get in for another 2 weeks and they want me to wait until they put me on something else. This means I have to go through 2 more weeks of hell. I used to be on Lexapro and ritalin years ago. The lexapro seemed to work but then I abused the ritalin. So I dont actually know if it really worked. Does anyone have an opinion about Lexapro and what about the age old prozac?

Yes - Yes - Yes. I loved the energy Wellbutrin gave me, but I had to take Effexor with it to even things out. Wellbutrin made me mean and bitchy and the Effexor made me nice. I couldn't take Wellbutrin by itself.

Interesting, it made me cranky but gave me no energy at all.

I had a short temper while on solo Wellbutrin; adding Zoloft on top of the Wellbutrin seemed to straighten things out.

Along with the lovely tachycardia that Wellbutrin brought on, it also made me extremely anxious and irritable. Plus I couldn't focus my eyes enough to read a book. I was so glad that it hadn't caused permanent damage to my eyesight.

I was only on it for 2-3 weeks because my poor heart just couldn't take it.

God bless,
Sandy

It's been awhile since I tried Wellbutrin and when I did it was monotherapy and I hadn't been diagnosed with Bipolar yet. I recall it making me jittery, giving me a headache, and making me B****Y too. The best thing about it was it was an aphrodisiac and I was able to have multiple orgasms which was a far cry from the other SSRI's I had been on previously. I was sad to have to let it go.

The only SSRI that does not cause anorgasmia for me is Lexapro but I'm not finding it pulling me out of depression. I only take 10 mg right now. My PDOC was going to raise the dosage and did for a week then decided to try to attack this blunting I've been having with Zyprexa so is having me ditch Zyprexa, stay on 100 mg of Lamictal, and cut back down to 10 mg of Lexapro. I don't know how I'm going to react to being off of AP's. I'm kinda afraid actually. She has Topamax waiting in the wings as a next trial. We'll have to see.

Anyways I hope you find your magic elixir, I'm still searching for mine!

This is scaring me alot since I have been prescribed bupropion for depression and am trying to build up to a therapeutic dose. Am at 37.5 right now. Very med sensitive due to benzodiazepine iatrogenic "dependence" and w/d.

I still take xanax 2mg. I dont want to become mean!

i was on wellbutrin 450mg daily, i mean i thought, well i do give it some credit, i did help with concentration, and having some intrest in things, besiedes that.....

I thought my brain was flouting out of my head. I had out of body experiences, panic attacks, you cant nap during the day on bupropion, it just keep you awake but irritibly awake.

I mean think of having feeling of adrenaline, anxiety, i odnt know.

Take prozac with it, thats where it got the the term "Wellzac"

You might want to ask your doc about taking something else (ssri) with the wellbutrin. I actually have some 2mg xanax and had to take it a few times to keep from losing it. I know that wellbutrin has some of the same properties that adderal has and I did not tolerate adderall very well. I hope you have some luck with it. I knew after a week but my doc said to give it three. I did and it still made me mean.

Hi,
While titrating up on Wellbutrin a few years ago I actually had a bout of road rage. Three guys pulled from the side of the road right in front of me. I had to lock my brakes and swerve into the other lane to keep from smashing into them. I turned and all three were flipping me off. The battle was on! Three against one. I was lucky I didn't end up in jail, or worse. And I'm usually a pretty mellow guy. Nothing like this had happened to me for over 30 years.

Seems like it is the first few weeks on bupropion that any repressed hostility rears it's ugly head. After a few weeks this side effect goes away, at least in my case.
Take care,
Jedi

Bupropion Side Effects

http://rx-s.net/weblog/more/bupropion_side_effects/

"In clinical trials of bupropion for either the treatment of depressive symptoms or for smoking cessation, the most common side effects reported are headache/migraine (26%) and insomnia (roughly 29%). A substantial number of patients taking bupropion experience increased agitation, anxiety, CNS stimulation, irritability, and restlessness. Some symptoms may be dose-related and may respond to dosage reduction. To limit insomnia, do not give doses close to bedtime. In some cases these symptoms may require treatment with sedative/hypnotic therapy. Depression has been reported frequently in smoking cessation studies (incidence >/= 1/100 patients). In roughly 2% of patients treated, CNS symptoms will necessitate drug discontinuation. While causality with bupropion has not been determined, CNS symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, and mania may be an indication of worsening depression or suicidal tendencies, and should be immediately reported to the health care provider."

Pearlcat, speaking from my experience, Wellbutrin made me hyper and "wired".Didn't stay on it for more than a few days, so maybe thats a premature judgement, however I have found adderall to: 1)At first give me a little more energy, but of a mellow sort and 2)this was very short lived. I think the body adjusts very quickly to stimulants, to the point of negligible positive effects. The same for Ritalin, thus the temptation to increase the dose. As for prozac, I'm on 120 mgs daily and it does help, but not nearly as much as the dosage might imply.Add xanax and remeron to the mix, and thats my "cocktail". I don't feel terrible, nor well, simply out of the pit I was in. Lexapro I gave up on probably too soon, so no advise there. Prozac and adderal might be helpfull, but you must stay at the prescribed dose. Hope this helps.

Yes, getting off the combo of Effexor and Wellbutrin has not been good. I didn't know until reading this thread that other people had that experience, so thank you.

Wellbutrin causes me to be almost... more depressed. I cry more often, get more anxious, am more tired, etc. It's crazy.

Yay for combos!

After you've tried Wellbutrin and Ritalin, you won't feel Lexapro. If you're an explosive person, Lexapro isn't going to make much difference. I took Lexapro (10 mg/daily) for one year and quit; didn't help at all. While on Lexapro, I routinely snapped at my family. I look at that time with shame: I was a tyrant to my family.

Did you try wellbutrin sr generic. I find it better. Just a thought. I'd be currious if the generic also made you mean.

I gave it all up. Now I am on Lithium and Lamictal. Of course I am still pretty cranky and short tempered, but not as bad. If I had stuck with it a little longer I might have been able to tolerate it. But I went to a new pdoc who seems to invidualize his treatments . I hope it works. I am ure alot of this is also mind overmatter as well.

Thanks pearlcat
