Dysthymia sufferers, do you have low sex drive ?

Posted by Marc Boucher on March 10, 2007, at 19:12:00

I've been wondering, and this is the perfect place to ask this :

For those of you that have recieved a diagnosis of Dysthymia, do you have low sex drive as part of the main symptoms ? As far as I'm concerend, I sure do have it.

Thanks

I need for those who recieved an M.D. made diagnosis of Dysthymia to chime in please. I have a few questions to compare my case to yours, since I have recieved an official Dysthymia diagnosis.

Well, low sex drive is one of the common symptoms of depression, so presumably it would be a common symptom of dysthymia as well.

I have an official diagnosis (Dysthymia with episodes of Major Depression) and have a low sex drive all the time, ie whether I'm dysthymic or in a depressive episode. My problem is that I was dysthymic for a few years before I was sexually active, so don't know whether I have a naturally low sex drive, or it's caused by the dysthymia. Whatever it is, it annoys the hell out of my boyfriend - I'm female by the way.

Same here and I'm part menopause now and thought I felt great for years but was always told that I had low grade depression even as a kid. My sex drive also has always been low to the point of zero now. Love Phillipa ps it's not meds as I wasn't on any till age 24.

I know that dysthymia in middle-aged men has been linked with low Testosterone, but in younger males, haven't found anything with this relationship.

Too bad there isn't as much info on dysthymia as there's on depression. Of course some will argue they're pretty much the same though one is less severe but chronic.

For those of ladies who replied, are you on any meds now ? Have you found any to help with the sex drive ?

I'm really puzzled about something : normally, when one has a low sex drive, dopamine is pointed finger at. Serotonin one constantly read has a libido killing effect, while DA revs it up.

However my sex drive got up on tryptophan, valerian, grade seed extract, fish oil and zinc--all used separetely. I guess used all at once it could help even more.

Libido is very complex, and involves immune cytokines, neurotransmitters and hormones.

I usually havea terrible time with concentration/focus. So reading is not fun to me, but i have to read should I want to find out something that's going to help my life improve.

I have the same symptoms, low sex drive, no focus, I was also diagnosed with dysthymia many moons ago. That was probably the reason I avoided and was able to function (barely) for so long without treatment in my teens.

None of the meds have been that helpful in reversing the low drive although many get relief on Wellbutrin if added to their other AD meds. I never took Wellbutrin alone, took it in combination with Celexa, but possibly that would be the best solution as long as Wellbutrin was effective for your dysthymia.

Are you on any meds yet and ask you pdoc about trying wellbutrin as your primary medication. That may help greatly if you try it first. That is what I would do if I could go back and retry it again.
