weird Adderall effects

Posted by squier on March 3, 2007, at 21:14:23

Hopefully this doesn't turn out too long but I would like to include as much information as possible. I'm 21 and about 120 pounds just for reference. I was first diagnosed with ADD(inattentive) about two months ago and was started on 36 mg of Concerta, it seemed to make things marginally better so we tried 54 mg which wasn't good. I felt very weird when taking them, foggy, cranky, and sort of zombie like, so after 2 days of that I stopped taking them.

Next I started Adderall XR 25 mg. This worked great for a few days, then I started taking some vitamins with it. Each vitamin produced very odd effects(compared to most people) which I will outline:

B6/Niacin/Folic Acid: Seemed to make me cranky or feel foggy
Omega 3: cranky
magnesium: cranky/foggy
Theanine/tyrosine: seemed to make adderall less effective
Green tea: foggy/cranky

Whenever I took any of those with the adderall they produced a negative effect, either making me feel similar to the concerta or making me feel sort of bad and limiting the effect of the adderall.

I decided to stop taking all the vitamins and just take the vitamin E that my psychiatrist recommended as it didn't seem to affect the adderall at all. I took a day off from it all and started the Adderall again. It was great for 2 or 3 days and then yesterday I took it without any breakfast for the first time and I got feelings similar but less severe than if I took it with vitamines. I felt slightly down, didn't experience the dry mouth I get when the Adderall works, my head felt weird, and it didn't make me feel energized as it does when it seems to work.

I haven't read anything about people having problems with taking vitamins on Adderall and most of the vitamins I took because people on Adderall recommended them. Does it sound like a problem with Adderall, stimulants in general, or my diet? I have been experimenting with eating different things for breakfast and taking different supplements but when they produce a bad effect it sucks to go through the whole day like that. I will be asking my doctor next time I see him but that's not for about 2 weeks, so has anyone heard of anything similar?

I wonder if you might want to post this on the alternative thread too? Love Phillipa

magnesium: cranky/foggy
Theanine/tyrosine: seemed to make adderall less effective
Green tea: foggy/cranky

These are drugs you generally want to stay away from when in combination with amphetamines. Amphetamine causes a higher than normal magnesium level, tyrosine in theory might cause more dopamine to be available but it doesnt work while using amphetamines. I cant remember the direct mechanism behind why l-tyrosine/dlpa dont play well with amphetamine but for some reason they just dont work. Green Tea should in theory cause amphetamine to last longer/be more intense because of how it modulates COMT, i've never really had the desire to experiment with this since my dexedrine is more than enough for me.

Taking Adderall on an empty stomach (say an hour before meal) should give you a greater effect than with food. Also, if your vitamins contain say vitamin c, this could theoretically decrease absorption if taken at the same time.

A friend of mine who takes Adderall swears he hardly notices anything if he takes it with food (or acidic drinks such as juice, cola or coffee). Taking it on a (relatively) empty stomach and only with water makes all the difference for him.

Jusy fyi. Good luck. Peace...Saturn.
