I thought this might be of some interest to someone...although, don't we know this already? Anyway it suggests that we have different levels of dopamine receptors...
Anyway there's a triggering image of someone actually injecting themselves, which you might want to avoid. I can't believe the Beep put in such an an image!

I think it might have been put there to make people go 'ewww' - probably makeup I imagine. Yes, I do think it's possible that some people struggle to get pleasure out of everyday life which might be due to having fewer dopamine receptors. Aren't people who have fewer dopamine receptors at higher risk of developing Parkinson's Disease?

It's going quite well actually. The picamilon is useless as it was the last time I tried it (I'd been hoping that benzos were negating the results on my first trial, but not so it seems). I took 2x300mg tablets this morning and I feel a bit perkier and brighter so far. I feel a bit calmer, which is a surprise.

Good to hear it Q! I would love to try something like that, but at the moment I'm au natural, well I reckon something to perk me up would be good. I just feel so sluggish and I'm living a half-life. Meh.

Merri so your study is saying a brain is wired to be addicted to substances and gambling and dopamine lack of is the culprit. So which USA meds are dopamine? Isn't wellbutrin one? Hey remember I'm trying to learn. Love Phillipa

>The metabolites of Adrafinil (as well as Modafinil) contain sulfur, and can easily be detected by a peculiar odour of the urine of the person who has taken it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdrafinilIt actually smells more like stewed teabags than sulphur, most peculiar indeed. The benefits I felt earlier seem to be wearing off - took another 300mg but felt nothing. Could actually have been due more to the taurine I took this morning than the adrafinil.

Not that simple-loads, from zyprexa to stimulants, to wellbutrin, maois, others- all do something with dopamine. Dopamine isn't an ingredient in the drugs- it's a type of neurotransitter in the brain.

Hi Phillipa,
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain, like serotonin or noradrenalin (norepinephrin). The theory goes that depressed people have less of one (or all) of these neurotransmitters circulating in the brain. The brain releases dopamine in response to pleasurable stimuli like having sex or winning at gambling, and you get a high. What the study is saying is that people who have less dopamine circulating in the brain get addicted to gambling (or cocaine) more easily. Presumably because they have less of a 'natural high' (if you can put it that way), the high they get from gambling or cocaine is more rewarding to them. I think it's a bit like eating chocolate when you feel down in the dumps- and you eat the whole bar- vs when you feel happy- and you can stop after a couple of squares (I know that's true for me!). A few antidepressants interfere directly with dopamine circuits in the brain- Wellbutrin is one of them, and I'm pretty sure MAOIs do too. But because dopamine highs are so addictive it's difficult to create safe meds that act directly on dopamine. Most antidepressants increase mainly serotonin and/or noradrenalin in the brain- but it's possible that they act indirectly on dopamine, I think there's some debate around that.
It's quite a cool study!

They made a nice insinuation that AD/HD is like functional drug addiction. How nice of them...

This is "depression", and no one really knows the reason.> So if a square of chocolate in the past was enough and satisfied you but now nothing does no amt and you dont get the rush from winning the lottery what are you and what are you lacking? Love Phillipa

Million dollar question! Wish I knew... Still, what matters is that some treatment works even if you don't know why or how. I hope the thyroid regulation works for you,
I.
