Last year i failed on Parnate because i couldn't tolerate the side effects; severe insomnia and terrible afternoon fatigue. However i was on a very high dose (way too high in my opinion) 160 mgs. a day.
I just started Parnate again yesterday with the goal of keeping the dose much lower to hopefully reduce the side effects dramatically. One question i have, are side effects related to dose amounts? Common sense tells me yes. What are your opinions?
My plan is to find a dose that 'works' hopefully 50-60 mgs. and STAY THERE as long as possible.
Please everybody give me your advice/recommendations, i really want to make this work this time.

Were you using a hypnotic at night? I used 80-120mg Parnate in combination with 4mg Klonopin and 200mg Lamictal. I also took the Parnate in regular divided doses throughout the day, with the last dose at around 5-6:00PM. I found the stimulant effect wore off nicely this way and the sedative effect of Klonopin took over at night when I wanted to sleep.

My pdoc has me on Trazodone for sleep which works 'okay' periodically. Sometimes i use benadryl, but it makes me tired the next day. Any suggestions?

> -MonteU did well on lyrcia, have u thought of using the lower end instead with a benzo,i know u dont like neurontion, but speaking in like terms i know the neurontion does aid the effectivness of the bezno.
Also if the med brings a robust success, perhaps then you might actualy notice a benzo work for you?
You have over the counter taurine, but everything i know of for anxiety all works in aid with a benzo.
Zyprexa seems to be a favorite however for anxiety and about one of the few drugs ive seen mentioned as strong.
Depakote also in doses much less then needed for mood stablization effects gaba sites strongly and can be pretty calming.

One knowledgeable person said that insomnia was a problem to him on *any* dose of Parnate, although he wouldn't have been talking about 10mg/d.

How about you Declan, do you find the side effects are worse with higher doses?

I never tried higher doses.
There is something in the Parnate effect I found unhelpful/agitating in doses over 10mg/d.

> -MonteHi Monte,
Currently I'm taking a small dose(25mg) of Seroquel for the med induced insomnia. Seems like a little overkill using an atypical antipsychotic for sleep, but it works. Like you, I've built up a tolerance to the somnolence effect of benzodiazapines. Clonazepam still helps with my social and generalized anxiety. I've used benadryl, trazodone, ambien, etc. The Seroquel works the best for me, it's nice to be able to sleep again. Hope it holds up as I titrate up on the Parnate.
Take care,
Jedi
