Maois and Eating At Restaraunts

Posted by bulldog2 on February 22, 2007, at 12:01:41

My p-doc want me to try parnate as a collegue of his has had good success with it. Seems like there might be a trend towards using this class of meds again.
I would have no problem with the diet at home as I eat very simply. However one of the last pleasures I have in life is going out once a week. I go to sports bars and places like Ruby Tuesdays's and Friday's. Would I be safe ordering a hamburger without cheese? I don't know wether they use soy sauce in their mix. How about a steak. Almost all foods have some sauce or whatever on top. What about salad drssing? Any safe ones? How do any of you on an maoi deal with eating out?

I did one box of 6 mg patches with no effect on depression. No real sides either except for some skin irritation. P-doc says I could go up to 9 mg and would need the dietary restrictions or try parnate. I realize that emsam at 9 mg is still safer as far as hypertensive crisis goes but I have no doubt that parnate is the more effective med as is nardil. Still haven't made up
my mind wether I'm ready for the plunge.

American cheese on your Hamburger is fine. Just remember pretty much nothing aged. Most sauces that are made fresh are fine. Be frank with the waitress...no cheddar/aged cheeses, no soy sauce, the risks are really not as bad as once believed. Study the MAOI (updated diet list) and use good common sense..you'll be fine.

You can check out the website of a lot of chain restaurants and view the menu and often the ingredients. Doing that would let you pick something out in advance. I often tend to stick with the same thing that I've found to be safe when I return to a restaurant. I also carry a business card with the main MAOI restrictions printed on it. I almost always hand that to the waitperson when I order and ask them to check with the chef/cook before putting my order in. I try to have a back up selection ready in case they nix it. It's usually not hard to have them do something without cheese or without a sauce or something, too. Only two service folks were difficult, and I've been taking an MAOI for at least 3 years now.

Good luck.

Many burgers and sausages contain yeast extract and soy-based additives as flavorings. I noticed this when I was taking Parnate, but I never did test one out to see if it provoked a hypertensive crisis.

I took Parnate for most of the past 19 years. For about 3 years, when I was living alone, I ate out 3-4 times per week, including places like Fridays and Ruby Tuesday. I never had any problems. Cheeseburgers are fine with American cheese. I also had many kinds of aged cheeses over the years, but in small quantities.

If you have any problems, it will most likely be because of eating something containing tyramine in a large quantity or as an ingredient in a sauce. The only reaction I ever had was not in a restaurant when my wife cooked something with a sauce made from canned cheddar cheese soup. That was about 14 years ago.

I think you'll find the dietary restrictions surprisingly easy to live with.

Michael, are you still taking Parnate, and if
so what dose? Is it still effective for you?

Nineteen years has got to be some kind of
a record!
