Posted by linkadge on February 20, 2007, at 17:28:43

Doctor prescribed trileptal. I am hesitant to try it after reading the carcinogenicy and mutinagenicy tests on www.rxlist.com

Anyone think anything of this med?

Unfortunately it caused another medication to create a sensation of thirst, which is part of my somatiform complex -- maybe, or maybe Seroquel has that, or maybe Trileptal has it. We could never figure it out but it went away eventually after discontinuation. So I can't offer any suggestions other than it is definately safer than carbamazepine (Tegretol).

More serious than any long term mutagenesis possibilities, is hyponatremia, which occurred in 2.5% of patients. Low sodium levels are a far more serious and immediate concern and should either be monitored occasionally or at least when hyponatremia sterotypy symptoms appear.

And then there are more rare rash and multiorgan issues.

In general, though it, at least in the short term, is a fairly safe agent and much more tolerated than its predecessor Tegretol. If you don't have too much polypharmacy its probably worth trying if you are going through the laundry list of AEDs and you dont have anything that interacts with 2C19 or 3A4 (e.g. Valium); adjustments would have to be made.

Thank-you as my pdoc gave me a script for trileptal I haven't filled. Took l50 before no side effects but was supposed to go up and my sodium level is always low. Love Phillipa

It mellows you out, well at higher doses. My stepdad takes 600mg in morning for siezures, and 600 at night.

It mainly has alot of mood stablizing properties, and with *some* calm mind properties.

Total waste of time and money for me. Did nothing.

Sorry :(
