If Wellbutrin is an attypical anti-depressant, is it ever combined with Prozac? Would this have a complementary effect or just an additive effective no better than a larger dose of just prozac or wellbutrin?
just curious,

Wellbutrin should be combined with other agents that reduce the seizure threshold extremely cautiously, and those include Prozac.Wellbutrin SR/XR decrease this risk a fair bit from the original Wellbutrin but it is still present. It is not a terribly recommended combination without a doctor aware of these issues, not to mention that Prozac will be in your body for 35 days and this cannot be altered should you have problems.
An SSRI with a much shorter half life such as Paxil would be a better choice for a skilled psychopharmacologist to even attempt to combine. A small dose of any AED, Klonopin, etc, would also be a good idea.Cymbalta would probably be a better choice, although it doesn't have a high dopamine profile, or Wellbutrin alone if it serves your purpose.

Hi,
I take Wellbutrin with Cymbalta and Neurontin. The Neurontin is there to lower the seizure risk from the Wellbutrin. The Cymbalta is there as an adjunct antidepressant.Cymbalta is similar to Prozac in its effect on Serotonin levels. The difference is that Cymbalta also affects noradrenaline levels.
So, the part of Cymbalta that works on serotonin levels, when combined with Wellbutrin, works the same way Prozac would in that combination.
I can't be too specific here because everything is so subjective with depression. All I can tell you is that together, these three meds work a lot better than Cymbalta alone. In addition, Wellbutrin is "motivating" for some people in that it counteracts the sedative effects of SSRIs and SNRIs.
It doesn't work for me that way, unfortunately. I still feel sedated most of the time. But that's just me.
Anyway, that's my experience with those meds. Hope the info is of some use to you.
Good luck and best wishes,

Prozac + Wellbutrin. Fairly common combo. Additive and complementary. Not the same as increasing prozac dose alone. As with anything, mileage varies. It could be wonderful, it could feel no different, or it could feel worse. I will keep my fingers crossed that you will like it. But yes, just to put any doubts to rest, it is a common combination and has probably been done thousands of times.
