I've been struggling with break though symptoms for the past several years. I've been diagnosed with schzioaffective disorder. I've tried every atypical antipsychotic drug and nothing seems to work. My PDoc wants me to try Clozaril. Has anyone had any expereince with it or know something about it. I know about the blood tests, which is a drag, but if the drug will help I will do it. I'm desperate.

schizoaffective patients sometimes don't need neuroleptics...have you tried lithium, depakote, trileptal, etc. to stabilize your condition? Those would be better long-term than neuroleptics.
Also...if you're not already on a mood-stabilizer, using a mood-stabilizer+neuroleptic sometimes makes both drugs work better, and at lower doses. I'd avoid lithium if you're also going to take a neuroleptic, though.
Personally, I think you should try mood stabilizers--maybe even multi-mood stabilizer combos, like lamictal+lithium--before you go for an antipsychotic, especially clozaril. It helps some cases of treatment resistant schizophrenia, but the side effects are *intense*, so if there are any other options, you might want to look into those first.
Good luck.

l0 years ago when it first came out or around that time I saw miracles with the med for schizophrenics that couldn't take the old neuroleptics but with the atypicals maybe they work better? Love Phillipa

Hello med_empowered,
I take 900 mg of Lithium and used to take 5 mg of Zyprexa with it, later 10 mg. Why would you avoid Lithium with a neuroleptic? I am withdrawing from the Zyprexa now - down to 3.75 mg.

I'm sorry that nothing has worked for you, and there are other options.
Hang in there.

I don't understand. When did you start the Seroquel? How long did you take it at 100 mg? Where does the 8 months come into it?
Perhaps you should listen to your own body first and to your therapist second. If 300 feels fine then don't let your therapist talk you into taking more.
Your best revenge on your therapist is to get well and take your business away from him.
Good luck!

I agree with Ronaldo 100%. Jeroen, have you told your doctor what the higher doses have done to you? He or she might have no idea, because everyone responds to medication differently. If not time for your next appointment, you should call. Unfortunately, not even the best doctors can know how exactly you are feeling if you don't explicitly tell them- we must remember psychiatrists have no special powers. Please tell him or her.
