Hi Everyone:
I was recently diagnosed as being bi polar. I am probably between a BP2 and cyclothymia. I recently went through the withdrawls from Effexor which my previous doctor had me on for GAD! What a croc!
Anyway I have tried Seroquel and my head generally wanted to face plant in my food, so thats out, Abilify messed with my mitral valve prolapse and gave me hypotension, so thats out and now I am on 2.5 mg's of Zyprexa. It is great for sleep and works well for anxiety. However, I am still depressed. Can anyone recommend a good antidepressant to compliment the Zyprexa??? I really want the old me back and any help would be great!
John

Sadly there is no predicting what add-on you would do well with. The most researched combo for zyprexa is prozac. But any ssri could do well with it. Trial and error is unfortunately the only way. With 5mg or 2.5mg zyprexa I have been on prozac and then zoloft. Both were ok, both had their own pros and cons for me.
This is pure opinion and debatable, but I would start with zoloft first. The main reason is that if it doesn't work out in 1 to 4 weeks, you can immediately switch to prozac or something else, because zoloft's half life is 24 hours. If you start with prozac and it doesn't work out, it has a super long half life and will still be in your system up to a month, making any transition to another med tricky and confusing.

My son is taking 75 mg of Zoloft with 10 mg Zyprexa. His dx is schizophrenia and the Zoloft
takes the edge off his anger and nearly eliminates obsessive behavior. I honestly don't know if it will help depression that much, but in my opinion it's worth a try.

Zoloft also has a very mild effect on dopamine unlike the other SSRIs.I would agree with the half life issue, not to mention the harshness of Prozac being the first successful SSRI. Paxil has an even lower half life if I recall. Years ago I took Prozac but I wouldn't put it in my system any more for the reason that it can take up to 35 days to flush out of the system if you have to dump it.

Celexa works great with the zyprexa for me. I didn't like prozac. And I have not tried any other SSRI's. But I had a real good experience with the celexa and zyprexa.
