Parnate/Prolactin Connection

Posted by halcyondaze on December 20, 2006, at 13:47:07

I bought this APA-approved book (from 1994) on MAOIs and there was research into Parnate and increased prolactin levels. I'm wondering, could this be why this drug (again) might be causing cystic acne and, if so, would hormonal birth control reduce this? Which HBC is most effective for reduction of prolactin levels?

Dopamine agonists like pramipexole, requip, bromocriptine, and cabergoline reduce prolactin levels. According to some studies they do it without affecting the efficacy of the other meds and sometimes improve the other meds. But from what I hear their side effects of somnolence are troublesome for some people.

Pretreatment with depakote 400mg was shown to prevent the expected prolactin increase of amisulpride.

Increased prolactin levels from some meds automatically reduce themselves after several months. But I'm sure that is a situation of 'your mileage may vary'.

For natural treatments, I don't know. I've heard chasteberry is a D2 agonist.

Do they use these meds if your pituitary secretes prolactin too? Love Phillipa

Well ive used GHB extenivsly which i know has a strong effect on prolactin levels, and i also use parnate.

One side effect i get from both are,and excuse me ladies, but a increased sex drive,HOWEVER delayed ejaculation, almost at times to the point where i simply cant.

Again the drive is always there, but the latter effect also, not sure on lowered or highed, but i know BOTH drugs have similiar effects on prolactin and i wonder if thats a double whammy of a side effect.

I also at times have acne outbreaks on my chest, but never on my face, but theres my take as well.

My pdoc and I independantly determined that this was probably due to N-Methyltranferase being inhibited as well as MAO. This is the stuff that clears histamine out of the mast cells. Did you get little bumps on your chest when you got out of the shower that went away in a few hours?

Did you check your Prolactin levels?

Cabergoline reduces prolactin.

I was on 80 -100 mg of Parnate with no problems. However, I was just on a trial of Nardil. At 30 mg I started to get severe cystic acne on my back. At 45 mg I lactated. End of trial. Nardil must affect dopamine more than the Parnate.

Nothing to really worry about. You probably have sensitive skin like I do. Use the mildest soap and shampoo that you can get, and keep whe water temperature down. Ive found that taking 10mg doxepin before I go to bed really helps since it is the best antihistamine around. Drove me nuts until I figured out what it was. I thought I was being eaten alive!!!

Thanks,i was gonna mention it to a primary doc when i get one soon,i need to get a few things checked like im very worried about my ears ringing, hurting, feeling irrtated deep inside, etc.

I also have occasional popping.

If any men have answers to the second side effect i mentioned, please let me know,p.s i tried carbergoline, and aside from making me feel terrable,it did not help the problem.

I had no sexual problems with Parnate, but there may be a difference in your ability to function soon after taking your dose and when its wearing off. There may be fluctuations in dopamine soon after taking a dose - have you tested your sexual responses at different times?

Have you tried cyproheptadine (Periactin) - it's safe to use with Parnate. It's an antihistamine that also lowers serotonin levels, which is often the culprit behind antidepressant induced sexual dysfunction. Its antihistamine action may also help your rash - someone else suggested doxepin (presumably due to its antihistamine effects) for this purpose. Cyproheptadine would also help you sleep. There's a risk that taking it daily long term may reverse the antidepressant action of Parnate, but this is not certain since Parnate has a much broader action on neurotransmitters that contribute to its antidepressant effect than serotonin.
