Better Living Through Modern Chemistry

Posted by tweeds on December 15, 2006, at 14:10:06

Y'know, I started taking clonazepam 0.5mg for the first time in my life 2 months ago, along with my 40mg/day Prozac.

I couldn't handle getting up in the morning. I take it before bed now. I wake up, I play with my 2 small daughters, we have a good time together as we get dressed, breakfast, and get ready to go to school/daycare/work.

Thank goodness for the two months of peace I've had in the morning. Yeah, I know benzos aren't a long term strategy, but damn it, clonazepam got me out of the irritable, anxious, angry rut that I was in every freaking morning.

I give thanks.

It is really good to hear a positive post also. I may have overstepped the bounds of decency when I characterized that a lot of posts on here are negative because people are frustrated and exhausted with going through medication after medication (I sure know I hate polypharmacy but I have to do it) and that they wouldn't be here if everything was going great in life. I wish you the best.

You know what? I have no idea why I said that.

I've wrestled with various diagnoses since 1986, and the entire time, I've had this phobia/fear/BigScaryMonster thing about benzos. I've NEVER taken them until now. Depending on which doctor you talk to, I'm either SAD or unipolar.

I think you just pointed out my own neurosis about benzos, that, as you have already probably guessed, I'm wrestling with.

Thanks for asking the question. A little more insight into myself, really.

Up until my recent bout of depression, I'd never had panic/anxiety attacks. Then one day I shut down entirely at the steering wheel of the car in the parking lot of the office upon arrival at work. Took me an hour to get out of the car. And after that day, then a month of stomach-up-in-the-throat, heart-pounding, sweating terror every damned morning.

And it's now gone. Whew.

Again, tensor, thanks for asking the question, though I don't think I answered it in the way you thought I might. That was useful.

Better be been on them for over 30 years. Don't work as well. But haven't increased their dose. I trust them more than the other meds. Love Phillipa

Benzos have really been given a bad reputation by people that should know better. Why is it that the serotonin system is considered more legitimate that the GABA system I wonder?
