I hope this question isn't too confusing but I am wondering about people on seroquel versus lamictal in terms of weight gain and other side effects.
Does lamictal make you tired like seroquel can? And who has gained weight on either of these drugs? Thanks so much I really really appreciate it!

This is a good page for these kind of meds:

seroquel is now the "it" neuroleptic for all things bipolar, and also anxiety and sleep. Its densely sedating, causes weight gain, and can contribute to diabetes. It can also cause neuroleptic malignancy syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, and akathisia.
Lamictal can cause a deadly rash now and then, but nothing too crazy. Personally, I say give lamictal (and pretty much any other non-neuroleptic option) a whirl before you try seroquel or any of the other "atypical" neuroleptics.
Good luck.

> AprilI guess it depends on what the drugs are for. And I guess it depends on which psychiatrist you ask. Some will say do the traditional mood stabilizers first. Some will go right to the neuroleptics.
If it is for bipolar, it is not uncommon to need more than one to get the job done. Monotherapy works sometimes.
Lamictal is sedating to some people, neutral to some, and activating to some. I don't think weight gain or metabolic issues are much of a concern. The neuroleptics usually cause some weight gain. For longterm use, the disclaimer behind lamictal states it is to delay the onset of the next episode. But then, all drugs seem to be that way for a lot of us. While lamictal is generally thought of as having good antidepressant power, 3% of people in clinical trials become suicidal on it, and a number of us here have gotten worse on it. When I tried it, it felt like it just shut the switch to brain to the OFF position really fast. But a lot of people like lamictal. Mileage varies.
If you need good sleep and good antianxiety, seroquel wins. But I think it has more longterm risks so you would want the dose low for the longterm.
Just opinions though.

I didn't gain wt on lamictal but only got to 50mg and an uncommon side effect excess salivation so went off but no insomnia or anxiety. And seroquel I am using off and on with valium for sleep in low doses. I'm finding you need to increase the dose. Don't like that or the possible side effects. Love Phillipa ps I think I'll stick with the valium
