I have always had awful insomnia. Recently my doc put me on flexeril for muscle spasms. Instead of taking throughout the day, I took 3 at night and slept great. Question is can I become addicted and start needing more and more? i am bipolar and on lamictal, wellbutrin, lexapro and klonopin at night(but the klonopin does nothing for sleep). Thanks

>Hi....no, I don't think this med is. It is actually a tricyclic med, similar to antidepressants like Amitriptyline, Clomipramine, Nortriptyline, etc. So I have never heard of any addiction problems with Flexeril. Sometimes Amitriptyline is used for pain as well. Jay

>I'd hardly call it addictive, I found the stuff such a vile tricyclic of the various offerings my doctor was willing to give me instead of Soma that I stopped pretty much after the first day or two.
But I'm glad it is helping you for your muscle spasms. Everyone is different and that's great.

I also don't think it's supposed to be addictive, but I believe it has a strong antihistamine effect, which some people find pleasant. People generally develop tolerance to antihistamines, developing the need to take more, so maybe (-maybe-) that could be a part of it. Also, I believe flexeril has some powerful anticholinergic effects, meaning that it's not really meant to be taken long term because it speeds your heart-rate, and that the effect could become dangerous to your heart at larger doses. You may wish to check on that detail, though. Be careful!
