Hi,
I've certainly noticed a lot of posts about EMSAM in the last few months, but I haven't found any dealing with how the experience might be different from the oral or sublingual versions of the drug that have been available for years. Has anyone taken EMSAM as well as one of the oral types of selegiline? I've heard speculation that EMSAM could be more energizing, and that it's greater parent-to-metabolite ration might be good for other things as well.
Thanks,
Psychobot

Good thought. I did try it, and found a wealth of theoretical information on MAO-A levels and metabolites...but no actual information from people who'd tried both.

I've taken oral selegiline up to 20-30mg (it's been a long time) and I tried EMSAM last Spring up to the middle dosage (is that 9mg?). I found EMSAM to be a lot LESS energizing than oral selegiline.. perhaps because of the relatively low amount of l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine metabolites compared to oral. EMSAM was still energizing (and somewhat anxiogenic), but not quite as much. I had to stop taking oral selegiline because it was causing palpitations; I didn't get any of those on EMSAM. EMSAM was also quite a bit less prosexual than oral selegiline and it didn't have the same effect on smoking (I don't smoke anymore, but when I had a pack-a-month habit years ago, selegiline made cigarettes absolutely disgusting and made quitting very easy).
I didn't get much out of EMSAM at all. I think it's a shame that they didn't try to make a transdermal formulation for one of the older MAOIs (although I've heard that Parnate is quite irritating when used in a patch).

Does that mean you wanted a stronger med? As I'd like a milder one. Love Phillipa

I had hoped for a more positive comparison, but I must admit I'd always been suspicious that the amphetamine metabolites might make the oral version more energizing. Thankyou very much for responding.
I agree that it is too bad other MAOis aren't formulated for transdermal release--I think it's because they'd still be considered dangerous, tyramine-wise, because they are so unselective. Still, it seems common sense that there'd be less MAO inhibited in the gut, comparatively, doesn't it? Making them, at least, somewhat less dangerous?Oh well.
This is the end of the thread.
