I've been on Geodon for about 10 days now. The first week was great (as long as I took it right before bed, otherwise I that akathisia thing that made me want the cut my head off).
But after a week, not as good, maybe even pretty bad.
I have had the up-then-down before, but this is suppose to "stabilize." What's going on!!!?

Ratings of medications are only useful if you have a double blind study of hundreds of patients.
Plus the QTc interval issue he gives is out of date, they did a 4000 patient restudy and the medication was reaffirmed and reapproved. Mellaril still continues to be prescribed even though it carries a definite QTc risk.
It also is one of the atypical antipsychotics with a wide dosage range, like Seroquel. Titering is easier in those regards.
Its negatives, well yes, akathisia I can sympathize with that, the rough scale is Risperdal->(Geodon, Abilify)->Zyprexa->Seroquel in terms of possible EPS of that nature. At least in my opinion. Of course as they say, your miles may vary.
But if you aren't getting the results you want (I'm not sure the Dx ?), there are the other aforementioned atypicals -- I don't know if you've already tried them or not

Geodon is good in schizophrenia/schizoaffective b/c it seems to improve negative symptoms (or at least not make them worse, as haldol and other can), and it has built-in reuptake inhibition/AD action, so thats a plus for a lot of people in that category.
Unfortunately, it seems that in bipolar there can be ill effects (bipolars are more sensitive to drug side effects anyway) including (hypo)mania.
Maybe you should try another atypical, or perhaps an anti-convulsant.

Geodon has a very short half life, 7 hours, thats the problem. It does not seem to work by itself for me. I take it with zyprexa. The geodon seems only to act as an antidepressant.
This is the end of the thread.
