Sleeping all the time... med related?

Posted by Gee on November 3, 2006, at 15:07:28

I'm on effexor and I've been on it for maybe over 2 years now. I sleep ALL the time. Well not all the time, but I usually have at least an hour nap in the afternoon and sleep about 10 hours at night. And I'm still tired. My aunt is worried about the amout that I'm sleeping, and so is my mom. I don't feel depressed. Could it be related to the meds? I'm on 150 mg.

Gee how do you feel when you're awake? Good? Functional? Doing well in school? As I require a lot of sleep too and always have. We're all different. And before the depression how much did you sleep to feel good? Love Phillipa

Phillipa, I think I'm functional. I'm doing okay in school... I'm getting out and doing things. This is really the first time I can remember when I didn't have a million things to do at once. Before, I always had a reason to be tired. I would sleep maybe 8-9 hours.

Emotionally you've had a hard time right? Maybe you need some extra sleep til you're settled? Love Phillipa

My friend has the same problem, and so do i
though not to such a great extent. I am wondering
about the various possibilites:

- aging-- are we supposed to get lower dosages
as we age?
- a virus like encephalitis?
- the mix of an AD or AP or AT with too much
Rivotril?
- or
look at this:

Neuroleptanalgesia

An intense analgesic and amnesic state produced by the combination of narcotic analgesics and neuroleptic drugs. Blunted affect is the scientific term describing a lack of emotional reactivity on the part of an individual.
Neuroleptoanalgesia A form of analgesia accompanied by general quiescence and psychic indifference to environmental stimuli, without loss of consciousness, and produced by the combined administration of a major tranquilizer (neuroleptic) and a narcotic. Neuroleptanalgesia may mimic sleeping sickness. Sleeping sickness is caused by a small parasite that leads to a serious infection in the brain and the meninges (the covering of the brain and spinal cord). An association with antiemetics, eg, phenothiazines, has been postulated to mask early symptoms, and it has also been proposed that antiemetics may further predispose the individual to a variant of this disease.

Psychotropic agents and tranquillizers (especially prochlorperazine, imipramine, phenothiazines, and their various derivatives, whose mlsuse has been long-associated with oral candidiasis, high rates of pneumonia, and other severe infection).

Thanks Squiggles, but I'm not sure I understand. So many big words! I want to know what it may be before I see my pdoc in dec.

Yes its related to the effexor use. I bet when you stop the effexor you'll get normal sleeping patterns back.

I doubt its related to anything else (although you never know). But I am sure its the effexor.

Same thing happened with me. Also with Celexa. I slept like 12 hours a night and needed an afternoon nap.

It was surreal - I even went to my GP about my sleeping, but he didn't know it was the drug (I'm not sure how on earth he didn't make the connection, but hey).

I googled it and stumbled upon this site, and soon discovered it was the Celexa, so I weaned off it, and got normal sleeping patterns back pretty quickly.

It was such a relief not to have to feel the need to nap! It wasn't so much as I was tired when I was awake - more just a need to sleep longer than normal and to have a nap in the afternoons. It was really impacting on my life actually.

Talk to your doc about your sleepiness and the effexor. Don't be surprised if he doesn't know about it (ie sleepiness being a common s/e).

Kind regards

Meri

Me too! I take 150 mg Effexor, and before that Celexa. The first time I noticed it was when I suddenly went weak while out shopping and had to rest. Now I take 150mg Wellbutrin as well and it's somewhat, but not wholly, improved. Is this sleeping the price we pay for staying on an SSRI or SNRI for a long time?

I really hope not Fred. If the withdrawal weren't so bad I would get off it NOW, but ha. It's so hard to go off it and do anything else...

What dose are you on? Increasing might help because the proportion of norepinephrine, which is stimulating, to serotonin, which may be sedating, would increase. So you'd have a little more of the stimulating hormone in comparison to before. The serotonin would increase too, but probably at a lower rate than the norepinephrin. Effexor is funny like that. At really low levels, it works more like an SSRI, with no or very low noepinephrine. At very high levels, dopamine might even come into play. That's stimulating and motivating. Does this make sense to you?

what about provigil + SSRI? » Gee

What asking your doc for provigil? That might help if you don't want to come off the effexor.

I am at 150 mgs right now. I was at 210, but it made my head so clouded. It wasn't so great for school.

I haven't thought about adding anything. I'm not sure I want to. I seem to have horrible reactions to ADs (the one's that they forget to tell you about)So I'm bit scared to try too much.
