Well the pharmacy doesn't choose whether or not I get generic or brand name. It depends on the doctor's specification.

Jelly no not all pharmacies carry the namebrand. The one's I've used have ordered it for me and had in a few days. But seriously greenstone is the one to ask for and it doesn't cost more as it's generic. Love Phillipa

Yes, that's what I meant. You can request of your doctor to write the prescription for namebrand. The pharmacy doesn't make this decision.

Well one neither pharmacy I use carries Greenstone. Namebrand prices aren't a problem for me, they are $5 a month for any medication, on or off-label, no authorizations necessary for 2nd/3rd line meds. Generics are $3. Good coverage, huh?

I use the Stop and Shop pharmacy where I live, and I talked with the pharmacy manager, and she told me just to call ahead a few days before refilling my alpraz. and she would order the Greenstone. Either that or I will just ask my doctor for a script for the name brand, like you. I am leery of the generic benzos now! Best wishes.

Hey guys I just tell my pharmacist I want the brand name he doesn't have to call the doc they don't care. I've done this in all my pharmacies over the years in different localities too. Love Phillipa

But you can ask for specific generics. There's a particular generic which, for unknown reasons, really works better for me, with ibuprofen-- and I've found a pharmacy that stocks that generic. It makes a huge difference.
The pharmacy may not order one for you-- but if you call around, you can find a pharmacy that has the brand you want.
Of course, unless your pdoc writes the prescription for the generic--

How about an online pharmacy? Maybe one of them would carry the generic you want?

I wouldn't have a problem getting the generic I've used in the past. My parents always send the filled prescription or paper script every month since there are no refills allowed where I live, I just have to call my doc to have him write it. This last time I told my mother to send the paper because I figured if it got lost in the mail, I got easily get the script rewritten without problems. If the filled script got lost in the mail, my doc would have to get creative and write it in a different way.

So, anyway, I figured since I was having problems with generics, now would be a good time to try the brand name version. It may even work better than my old generic, which would be great, especially if I could decrease the dosage. This would make me feel a whole lot better if I could get into the lower dosing range. (although I don't even know which range I consider myself targeting, since I've been a mixture of GAD w/mild panic attacks). I never thought about this before, but the trials were done with brand name, not various generics. This makes a big difference. I feel a little less crazy now that I realize I haven't gone off the deep end in the last couple weeks, it's the meds. I can take up to 5mg a day right now. I was at 3mg before.

Another unpleasant thought is that the amount of bioavailable alprazolam can vary from "batch to batch", so that in any given bottle of pills, you could be getting a different dosage.
I think I have had enough uncertainty and will definitely go with the name brand.

Exactly my sentiments...one's mental health is too important to leave to chance.
One well-kept secret is that there is a little empirical "magic" associated with making a particular drug formulation-that knowledge resides with the guys that first made several formulations and found them to be deficient. If all formulations of a drug substance worked just fine, there wouldn't be any industrial pharmacists.

This is just making me sooo tired and not a whole lot of help for axiety. I filled the presciption 9 days ago. I'd like to go back there, give them the remaining pills I have, and ask for brand name. Is this possible or would they have to call my doctor to approve it, which actually may not be possible since they can't call or fax controlled substances in NY.

Pharmacies can't take back pills once they've dispensed them. It's not legal to do so.
Your doctor would have to send you another prescription. Or, depending on how your insurance works, you'd have to wait perhaps another ten days to refill.

Jealibeanz I am sorry you are getting more anxious! I hope I can also get another script so soon - I had filled the current one on 10/9.
I am planning to get the xanax and my doctor said she would call it in,but I am going to wait to see her on Tuesday. I am feeling in withdrawals a bit, but not that bad. I am in MA and the doctor can phone in a script here. I too have the same worry that it is too soon.
Last year while tapering diazepam tablets, I obtained another script for diazepam (same doc) one week after - this time the liquid to taper with, and they had no trouble filling that. Maybe this is a good sign.

Actually I'm not anxious at all... basically sedated and sleeping all day, not exactly going to get me far in life. I'm not worried about getting the script filled too soon. If I called my doctor, he'd write a script, it would take a few days to come in the mail. The pharmacy would refuse to fill it, and I'd have them call my doctor, who would tell them I wasn't tolerating the generic.

Well that's good then. No problem. I am feeling much better taking the old(er) generic alprazolam I found.....just wish I had enough of them to last until Tuesday but I can always call my pdoc too. She is terrific, and she'll give me whatever drug I want to try or should I say am willing to try. I am the one with a cupboard full of A/D's that I won't take. lol.
Best, Val

No, not exactly good for a person who has chronic fatigue, which I have Provigil for, and am not sleeping 12-15 hours a day. This is not helpful when I have 8-12 hours of class Monday through Friday and need to study for exams. I other words, I will soon fail out.

Interesting this thread just appeared recently, as I tried Greenstone alprazolam for the first time a few days ago. One of my so-called friends stole my last few days supply of Purepac 1mg alprazolam a few days ago, and since that happened my best friend (who also has severe panic/social anxiety) has been helping me out with his Greenstone 2mg alprazolam.
I find them to be *much* more consistent in effect, as well as a great deal more anxiolytic. 1mg of the Purepac crapola just kept anxiety at bay; 1mg of the Greenstone brand and I feel very at ease, talkative, it's really wonderful.
Bottom line, next time I get my prescription I'm either having my pdoc write "Brand Name Necessary" on the script, or get the pharmacy to order Greenstone. The difference between these and the other varietes available is, to me, even more extreme than the variations among generic clonazepams.
Just my 2¢.

Did you find it to be more sedating that your generic alprazolam?

i just took a generic gen brand xanax. i am skeptical it did anything. i seem to have massive automatic tolerance before i even try benzos though. it doesn't matter if i haven't tried using them in a year.

I don't feel the Greenstone formulation was any more sedating than any other generics I've tried, though I may not be the best person to ask when it comes to trying to discern a drug's sedative effects. After all, the only things that sedate me these days are narcotics, barbs, meprobamate, and hefty doses of Halcion... :-/
