managing SSRI sexual side effects

Posted by mattye on September 7, 2006, at 9:48:58

Hi guys -

I've posted here a couple times about medication advise. I have depression, GAD, and ADD, with a history of addiction, opiates in particular.

Right now I am on Remeron, Wellbutrin, and Naltrexone. These medications are not managing my depression and anxiety very well.

I tried Lexapro, which worked pretty well, but unfortunately, the sexual side effects were pretty bad. This, however, was before I was taking the Wellbutrin. I've heard that Wellbutrin or a stimulant such as Ritalin or Adderall helps reverse the sexual side effects of SSRIs. My doc seems open to prescribing me a stimulant b/c I have been on Adderall before and I did not have a problem with abusing it (I prefer drugs that relax me, stimulants in high doses make me feel strung out, but in therepuetic doses, relax me).

Just wondering if anyone has had success managing sexual side effects using a stimulant + SSRI.

When I was using Cymbalta (an SNRI rather than SSRI) plus Ritalin, I had sexual side effects that I considered unacceptable. This was with only 40mg of Cymbalta per day.

When I added 150mg of sustained release Wellbutrin, things improved significantly, although not back to the pre-medication baseline.

For me, the Ritalin, even at high doses (up to 90mg/day for a while) did nothing to offset the side effects of the AD.

Try remeron. I took paxil with remeron and had no sexual side effects.

Although I believe I got some benefit from Ritalin and Adderall in managing sexual side effects when I was taking 80mg Parnate, the benefit was very subtle.

On the other hand, when I was taking Remeron (30mg) with 10mg Lexapro, the only sexual side effect I had was wanting it all the time. Quite manageable, to say the least. I'm surprised that the Remeron is not helping you.
