PTSD and dissociative disorder

Posted by Nicola_Nicolai on September 7, 2006, at 2:28:13

I recently saw a new psychologist. I've seen him only once, but I talked a lot about my family background growing up which was quite traumatic. I've always been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, but he suggested I might have PTSD and dissociative disorder. I've been reading up on them, and it seems quite possible. If you feel comfortalbe doing so, can those of you who have been diagnosed with either of those dx's share your experiences with the disorder and with therapy, including what has been most effective for you?

Is there any humane treatment for dissociation? (depersonalisation?)

Declan, I'm not sure what you mean. Are some treatments inhumane? Can you give an example? I know almost nothing about treatment of dissociation.

Hi Phillipa,

Thanks for your response. Aside from not remembering the past, can you tell me how PTSD effects your everyday life?

I usually zip thru this particular forum quickly ... can't remember if I've seen it here or if it would be better mentioned in Alternative Therapies, but the "latest greatest" for PTSD is EMDR (http://www.emdr.com/ ). Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is what it stands for, I have no idea what the h3ll it means.

Read up on it at the website. See if it pertains to your situation. I did my graduate work in psychology (but not clinical) ... but a few of my more clinically-minded friends from those days have suggested it to me. I don't know enough about PTSD tho to say one way or another -- you were traumatized over a span of years; mine is more from one specific event. And I'm way past the dissociative phase, so what I need may not be anything close to what you'd need.

Imagine that what your psych. says is true--
what proof is there that the damage done
by post traumatic stress, or any tragedy
in a person's life, can be reversed by
therapy alone, and that drugs are superfluous?
The brain can be influenced/changed by many
causes and once changed not return to the
original biochemical state.

I've had periods of depersonalisation and been Rxd the older APs. For the kind of weirdness I get it's like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

I have both PTSD & DID, in addition to being treated for ADD, depression & anxiety. If you like, you may email me privately, and I will be happy to offer any information which may help.

There are also many websites and rings available for both - I keep a 'secret' page on my own, specific to it, and it links many of the rings as well. Though I haven't updated that page in a very long time, there's probably still information you can get from it as well as access to an email address to use for me.

I also tried EMDR many years and it did help me 'accept' what was always unacceptable and hidden in my family (hence my own denial). Beyond that, I can't say, though I do wonder if giving it another go might help me do better now.

it just feels like to much too get into here and beyond the medications I've taken or now take, I doubt the rest is relevant to this board.

namaste,
lilith
