After the bad experience I had taking Trazodone a few hours after my regular sleep meds (could not get up out of bed the following morning and when I did get up I had to go lie down on the couch and fell deep asleep there for the rest of the afternoon), I decided to try taking Trazodone (50 mg was what my doctor gave me) by itself, ALONE, without my regular sleeping meds.
I was shocked by how this resulted in a totally different, but bad, experience -- I was up/awake THE WHOLE NIGHT. Literally. I just lie there, hoping that sleep would come, but it didn't and eventually the night passed and I could see dawn and daybreak from my window.
Perhaps 50 mg of Trazodone alone (no rhyme intended!) is not enough to get me to sleep (I've read dosage range can be 50-150mg), but at this point, I'm going to stick to my original sleep meds (which are inconsistent but better than nothing) and talk to my pdoc about the situations.

It depends too on what other sleeping medications you were taking. It is possable that you were experiencing rebound withdrawl (from the discontinuation of the other sleeping meds) which was too much for trazadone alone to take care of.
You may still have some luck by discontinuing other sleeping meds more slowly (?) or perhaps less trazodone with the other meds (?)
