Matt when was your last physical? They take blood work and would know from that if you were diabetic. If you haven't had one in a while you probably should. Oh were you running? Is it still hot there? Love Phillipa

I think all two of the comments are valid -- extreme thirst of unknown origin is a possible indication of diabetes (or rarely diabetes insipidus, a more complex and somewhat unrelated phenomenon).

However, its still late summer, and if you're taking medication as well, and you excercise too, your body is probably saying "thirsty." I mean, I take a **load of medications and I probably drink two to three 12-16 ounce bottles at the gym if I'm walking at a fast place on a 15% grade for 75 minutes.

There's the rare psychogenic polydipsia disorder but you would know that, you would be emptying gallons of orange juice or water at a time.

So I wouldn't worry too much, but a physical isn't a bad idea if you haven't had one in a while, or just simply adjunctive (on the side) tests for diabetes or electrolyte levels in the body.

Or it's dry mouth. Ambien gives me that at times. Antihistamines do. Heck, I bet Lamictal and Nardil also contribute.

I've been helped with this by using Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. That and having something to drink nearby to sip on as needed.

Actually, I have a sort of psychogenic polydipsia... I drink constantly, roughly a gallon and a half of water a day, as well as juice with breakfast and two or three diet sodas. It's partly thirst -- or what feels like thirst to me, I admit I don't entirely know; and partly anxiety, which causes me to "need" to do something with my hands/mouth. And it's partly from anorexia -- I would drink a lot of water, to help hide my hunger. If I had to break it down, I'd say that anxiety was probably what started it, way back when I was a kid (and drank whole milk by the carton) -- needing to have SOMETHING to do with my hands and/or mouth. I don't know now how I could have gotten through school as a kid -- nowadays, I need two bottles of water to get through my one classroom class, which lasts 2.5 hours. That's nearly half an ounce of water per minute, if you want to break it down that way...

But in Matt's case, I'd say worrying about it is what's making him thirsty... Less *being* more thirsty, and more being more *aware* of being thirsty... Just a guess, though...

The "normal" amount of water is about a half gallon of water a day, but if you're taking medications and in hot weather it can be considerably more, as one is supposed to have relatively clear (not concentrated) urine, so even a gallon of water is not completely excessive. But I can understand what it must be like from my own experiences.

I've experienced it through phases in my somatiform illness -- I prefer not to think about it because thinking about it long enough can bring it back. I generally have gotten around it by chewing gum, and yet at the same time I also had both thirst and drooling on the pillow at night to the point of spitting until all the meds hit me to sleep (pardon the graphic description). No medication was particularly one causative of such symptoms, although Trileptal as an adjunct seemed to bring back some of this.

Probably would be a good idea to get tested for diabetes..ive had periods where i feel like im thirsty all the time too, and im not diabetic..so it doesnt necessarily mean you are but nevertheless you should know for sure..
