I have been on Zoloft for 25 years, tried others Zoloft worked the best then. I am taking 200 mg a day, still depressed and have been crawling in a hole and don't care at all to do anything. Can you take both Zoloft and Effexor XR or do you stop the zoloft?

My doctor told me that Zoloft + effexor would give me too much seratonin. He prescribed a low dosage of Effexor and told me to stop the Zoloft and then he would weekly increase the dosage as the Zoloft got out of my system. I haven't started the Effexor yet, because I've seen some pretty disturbing postings on it. Zoloft isn't working though, so I don't know what I will do.

It would be more prudent to only take one or the other due to the possibility of serotonin syndrome or adverse effects from too much serotonin transmission. Effexor works on both serotonin and norepinephrine; there is evidence that boosting both of these systems tends to work better in the long term than simply taking an SSRI such as Zoloft.Todd
