Klonopin or Xanax XR better for depression anxiety

Posted by blueberry on June 16, 2006, at 16:36:35

My doc today wants to have me see some expert in the area for a second opinion. In the meantime, she wants me on a benzo. I have klonopin and she gave me a script for Xanax XR. I like regular xanax except for the peaks and valleys. My fear of dependency and tolerance is a lot higher with xanax than klonopin. Hopefully the XR version might not be so fearful.

Anyway, since I have had suicidal reactions to 3 antidepressants recently, and newly started lamictal is causing massive anxiety and fear, she says I might do real well on a benzo.

What's better for depression and anxiety...klonopin or xanax or xanax xr?

I'd go for the xanax it has some antidepressants properties. Klonopin is know to depress a lot of people me included. Good luck on you decision . I can't comment on the XR other than to say that I've heard it doesn't release as it should so people have to use regular xanax too. Love Phillipa

I took Xanax for a short time and it didnt do anything. Been taking Klonopin for nine years. Taking less now than when started (1-2 mg).

I guess everyone is different, but I have heard the same as Phillipa over and over - that xanax has antidepressant properties which I have experienced at a lower dosage, and that Klonopin can be quite depressing for some people.
Best,
Val

It's not that it doesn't release as it should, rather it only lasts about 17-18 hours for most people (not the full 24 hours). For me the XR is amazing. So you can either take it in the morning so that if you do have any withrawl effects they happen while your sleeping or you can do what I do and use 2 doses. I take 1/2 the dose in the morning and 1/2 at night. Works like a charm!

But then again, I'm weird. Xanax gives me energy and wakes me up. For most people it puts them to sleep or at least makes them tired. Just call me Ms. Paradoxical Reaction (happens with everything I've ever taken). :-)

Blueberry, can I ask what ADs you've tried that made you suicidal? I'm having the same problem. I recently tried Nefazodone and Cymbalta.

I have also heard from a doctor that klonopin can depress mood and xanax can "brighten" mood.
