Hmm... seems like another patent extension although Wyeth claimes lower nausea, etc. New pharmaceuticals are better living through chemistry in the 21st century, but all too often I see reinvented uses for old (currently marketed) drugs (which may have good effects -- but in fact have been effects used already off label), and metabolite NDA submissions like this one. Novel compounds are the real champions I would think.

has anyone heard when a decision by fda is expected. my doctor has talked to me about switching my ad from lexapro to effexor xr but if this drug is anywhere close to being approved i would try to hang in there. any info that you have heard or know of would be helpful. thanks all!

O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODV) is the only major active metabolite of Effexor, according to the monograph.

Look for Desvenlafaxine to be launched right before the Effexor XR patent is about to run out. I believe that is sometime in 2007. I would think that would be too long for anyone in serious depression right now to be waiting for. Anyway, probably not that much different (new and improved) than Effexor XR that is available right now.

unfortunately, some depressives may not be taking any medication, much less waiting for a new one. not everyone in the world (or even the US) can afford the abomination of western medicine -- that's one reason it's such an abomination
