I am scared to take concerta with atenolol

Posted by saturn on June 22, 2006, at 12:40:20

My doc has prescribed me concerta and atenolol.

I am concerned about the safety of this. Specifically, blocking beta receptors without concurrently blocking alpha receptors:

I have read before the caution that "beta blockers increase pressor effects of sympathomimetics". As I am particularly sensitive to the peripheral effects of stimulants this would be a disaster in my case.

Ed, I know you have answered this question before, but please don't be offended by my posting this again. I need to clearly understand if and why it is safe or unsafe to take such a combination. I do not trust my doc to be correct about this.

Unfortunately I can't take Coreg/carvedilol or Labetalol due to asthma. Thanks. Peace. Saturn.

hi! Sometimes docs co-prescribe beta blockers w/ stimulants. This seems to be pretty common with kids; the beta blockers help keep the quieter and more docile for longer. The ritalin+clonidine combo in particular seems kind of popular, at least in kids. Now and then kids have problems with the combo and/or die (the death thing is rare).

If I were in your position, I'd try: 1) talking to your doc 2) talking to a (non-psychiatric) doc and/or 3) taking the stimulant OR the beta blocker, but not both.

Good luck!

I'm not too familiar with the alpha blocker subtypes but what about atenolol+doxazosin (Cardura)

That's not a bad idea. Thanks.
