Hi
I haven't been around much because I have been dealing with a lot of things. I broke my wrist badly over 10 weeks ago and now I have to have surgery where they will rebreak the bone and put pins in (there are 3 breaks). Anyhow I am doing physio to get some mobility back BEFORE I have the operation.I have SEVERE pain 24/7. I have come to the conclusion (because the doctor doesn't know) that I have a pinched nerve somewhere in my wrist or hand. I have a sharp pain that radiates down my arm and up to my thumb. It's so bad that I have to sneak into the bathroom and just cry.
What would be good for this type of pain? Neurontin? Please help ... I can't take it anymore.

Hi Maxie
I was told by a good doctor that 'NOTHING works for nerve root pain', as he kindly wrote me a script for methadone. I had sciatica, and eventually a laminectomy. Nerve pain is in a class of its own.
Can you sleep?

> DeclanGreat! I am barely sleeping. I have never felt anything so painful in all my life. It's worse than the broken bones.
What to do?

Hi Maxie,
Welcome back to p-babble :)
Nerve pain is dreadful. Gabapentin (Neurontin) or pregabalin (Lyrica) might really help. Amitriptyline is also used but I know you can't take it.

Hi Maxie
I found Lyrica on the Health Canada website....
>Would he be the one to prescribe it, or should i try and see my GP?
I think either of them might be willing to write a prescription. You certainly need good pain relief fast.
I've missed you too Maxie,
Love

Maxie have they done EMG testing on your arm? To see if you pinched a nerve in your spine too?. I had one done. Love Phillipa

I tired Neurontin for several weeks and all I got was recurrent oral thrush. Effexor worked GREAT for my nerve pain for 2+ years before it pooped out. My current med for it is tramadol with robaxin as needed. I am also getting the facet joint injections in my lumbar spine for nerve pain every 12 weeks. Right before the injections and for several days after them I have to take morphine for the pain, along with many stool softeners to combat the effect morphine has on my digestive system. Nothing has appeared in my MRI and CT scan indicative of back surgery, but I still think I'm headed that directed if I don't get a medically necessary breast-reduction and tummy tuck. I had 4 children between 1998 and 2003 and I think the PGs took their toll on my body!
Morphine is great if you can tolerate the side effects.
Good luck,
Colleen

> MaximeGosh do you bring back memories. I was having such horrible pain in my neck that I was sleeping only two to three hours per night even with Neurontin, which by the way does help some. However, I ended up having surgery, and the neurosurgeon told me that I had a bone spur stabbing into the nerve root like a shard of glass. Removed that plus the disce and put in plate and pins. I now have no pain in that area. Amazing. I don't think they can always tell if a nerve is involved, and you definitely should be seeing the doctor ASAP. I ended up in the psy unit because I was in so much pain and had not initially followed advice to consider surgery--was scared if something went wrong and did not want to be like Christopher Reeves. So, the sooner the better getting in to see the doctor and get the surgery. I started losing strength in my arm, and such is a very bad sign because when nerves are involved it can mean never getting the strength back. I dealth with my soon enough that the strength did come back and as I said the pain down my arm as well as in my neck is gone--was like a miricle.

Hi Phillipa!
What's EMG? Did you have a pinched nerve and what did they do about it.Oddly enough, after suffering for over a month, I took that OTC medication for back pain ... it seems to have work. I am going try and not take it tonight and see what happens. I just have residual pain in my thumb now. You have no idea how relieved I am that the pain is gone, as it was like no other. Plus, I have to start preparing myself for pain again when I have surgery on my wrist.

Wow! Well my problem is that I can't get anyone to listen. I think they think that I want pain meds. I don't. I just want to know what is causing it and how to stop it. I see my ortho on the 5th.
Someone else mentioned a bone spur to me ...
Thanks!

Maxie an Emg measures the conduction from your back to your hand. They stick pins in your arm and have some kind of machine that shows how much pain or feeling you have in your arm, fingers. Mind was fine so nothing was done. My break is healed now but they want me to take a med for osteoporosis I have it in my hip. Love Jan

> I now my pdoc thought I was exaggerating the pain and even told me to consider having ECT because I was becoming so depressed over the pain. Boy was he surprised to hear from the neurosurgeon that he was amazed I was even able to walk around in so much pain. I think you will find some pain at first after the surgery and then you will feel so much better. When is your surgery??
