Lexapro at 10 mgs. was weight neutral for me. Lex at 20 mgs. has not been. It’s been a gradual process with gaining 8-10 lbs. over a year. I think it has had metabolic changes for me but so has a change in activity with schedule changes, more sedentary lifestyle and the ability to desire again to do the cooking and baking I loved so much that went completely away when I was shrilling down the drain. So, it’s a number of factors for me.

It’s been a blessing in disguise as I joined a gym 3 weeks ago and began a better eating theory and I’ve lost 5 lbs. and my summer wardrobe is fitting better everyday.

At this point, decreasing my dose isn’t something I entertain, things are too good so, hopefully, the tried and true will continue to be successful.

thanks - dont know if you remem. but you were very helpful to me way back when when i started lex - i think in like nov. ive been on only 5mg since then but now i have gone up (started monday) - actually not to 10 but i do 10 then 5 then 10 then 5 (and so on)- so really its 7.5. so weird to only go up that much and am having all of the start up stuff again - increased anxiety - exhaustion , dizzy, panic, etc. and im weight obsessed - so i cannot handle gaining one lb. ive been googling lexapro and weight gain nearly all day. ive gained 5 lbs in the past month for no reason and im miserable abt it. clothes dont fit right , etc. so i am truly terrified.

~~~ Ah, thank you for that comment. I really needed to hear that. Thank you soo...... I do remember you and it's good to hear from you.
~~~ I'm sorry that's happening. I didn't notice any gain on 10 mgs., it was only after I went up to 20 mgs. Again, there are alot of factors. I wished SSRI's did not have the reputation of causing weight gain in some folks, but a number of folks do report that.

I hope you can work it out (bad pun - sorry - smile) and still be able to continue a workable emotional treatment.

i hope so too - thanks - going thru a lot -separated from DH for 5 months - trying to deal w/ $$ issues - 3 kids. drinking more wine than usual (prob the weight gain). seeming to fall back into my obsession w/ weight much more than in a long time - things seem to be falling apart. and these 'start up' effects are making me want to go back to 5. i feel like i am on narcotics - like flexerol or smthg. i am a panicky zombie. i hate to feel both ends of the spectrum at once.

> also - why did you up your dose?

~~~ I was put on it in March 2005 at 10 mgs. In September of that year, I had struggles (that's putting it mildly) with an upper back problem and it sent to me into a depression/anxiety spiral. So, it wasn't an out of the blue thing but situational. Upping the Lex dose was a good plan. I thought it might be temporary, but I felt all over better, it was decided to stay that course. It does appear to be a good dose for me.
> are you on xan anymore?
~~~ I was a Klonopin gal. I stayed on it for several months initially which was REALLY important as I was a anxiety basketcase with startups. I also resumed using it consistently for several weeks when I upped the Lex dose, then weaned down to off. I have used K as needed since then but that has been very rare. I honestly don't remember the last time I took Klonopin. That's amazing to me as I think of it!!!

> how long did it take you to gain the weight?

~~~ I said a year but I guess it's been like right around 9 months.
It sounds like you have alot of really big transitions to cope with and alot of stressful events going on. It is NO wonder you are emotionally pushed to your limits right now. I'm sorry for that....
Take care of you!!!
when do you think i will stop feeling so jittery and heinous? shakey and panicky and exhuasted and dizzy. i am over it. how could i have this much start up stuff after being on 5 for 8ish months and only increasing to 7.5? makes no sense.
~~~ Have you done any AD's before... of any class?

There is an idea that if one is on a below therapeudic dosing that you may be getting the SE's and not getting enough of it to impact to get the good effects - I'm not sure I completely agree but I can see where that COULD be possible.

I would agree months and months of what feels like startup stuff seems a bit extreme to me and I can't blame you at all for being VERY tired of that. What does your doc say?

I do think you have to also take into account all the stressful events you have going on. I have had a difficult time coming to grips with "normal" reactions. Having struggled with toxic, over the top, awful responses to stressors, "normal" appropriate responses are scary. Sometimes, life is really s*ckworthy and we have to give ourselves permission to be uncontented about it.
