Diffrences in Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, XL

Posted by HEART~ on June 21, 2006, at 13:41:47

I read through other posts and am not sure I fully understood the diffrences of Wellbutrin. So perhaps someone could clarify exactly what the true differences are of each of the three Wellbutrin options: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, and Wellbutrin XL. I apologize If I sound dense but I want to make sure I fully understand the differences. Why would the Dr. or patient choose one over the other? So If anyone with experience with each one and information about each one can lay it out for me I would appreciate it!!

This is how I understand things:
Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL are respectively immediate release, sustained release and extended release. The rate at which the drug is released into your blood stream is slower with the SR and the slowest with the XL. The slower the release, the fewer the side effects, so theoretically XL should be the most free of side-effects while the normal immediate release should have the most side-effects, even though they are fundamentally the same drug.

That's right-they are all the same drug, just different rates of release. So with the XL, you only have to take it once a day. It was a matter of development of the drug-with the Wellbutrin immediate release you might have to take it three times a day; the SR twice and the XL once. It also has to do with initial concerns about Wellbutrin-induced seizures...the SR also didn't drop a whole pile of the stuff in your bloodstream at one pop.

The short answer is-if it is available, take the XL for convenience. People that have drug plans that pay for the SR and not the XL will probably take the SR to save money.
